    Man arrested after threatening to shoot woman, police and himself at Royal Oak Township home: MSP

    ROYAL OAK TWP. (WWJ) -- A 49-year-old man is custody after an armed standoff at a home in Royal Oak Township, early in the morning on the Fourth of July.

    According to Michigan State Police, troopers responded to the home in the on Mitchelledale Ave., near 8 Mile Rd., after a 911 call came in before 3 a.m.

    As police were a arrived on the scene, dispatchers could hear him say: “If the police come in here, I’m shooting you, I’m shooting them, and myself," MSP said.

    Troopers did try to enter the house, instead forming a perimeter and using a patrol vehicle PA system to order those inside to come out with their hands above their head.

    The commands continued for about an hour, the victim got back on the phone and police were able to speak with the suspect, convincing him to surrender.

    After the man was arrested, troopers seized a 9mm pistol and 20g shotgun from inside the home.

    No shots were fired.

    The suspect was taken to jail, while he awaits a prosecutor review of the case. His name was not released, with charges pending.

    “Great work by dispatchers and troopers to be able to deescalate this situation, and resolve it safely,” said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw. “We want to remind anyone involved in a physical or mental domestic violence situation, help is available by contacting police or the Michigan domestic violence hotline at 866.VOICEDV.”
