Maumee mayor confronts complex sewer issues and popular discontent
Maumee Mayor James MacDonald affirmed his confidence in embattled city Administrator Patrick Burtch and vowed to rethink how the city can comply with an Ohio EPA order that mandates reducing inflows of storm water into the sanitary sewers, he said in an interview with The Blade. The city’s sewer dilemmas stem from the discovery that for 25 years, Maumee employees had illegally discharged sewage into the Maumee River and falsified reports to the EPA about the city’s practices. The mayor said he could have handled the introduction and rollout of the sewer inspection and remediation ordinance differently. He acknowledged that he was “not completely in the know” that an order issued by the Ohio EPA on July 21, 2021, required the city to submit a Sewer System Evaluation Study by July 21, 2024. That order required the city in its report to identify “all feasible cost-effective actions needed to minimize or eliminate” clear water infiltration into the sanitary sewers. The mayor took office on Jan. 2. He said that when he realized that the study deadline was fast coming due, it was necessary to move quickly.
Life on the lake: Paddleboarding marks end of summer at Wiregrass
Paddleboarding may have its roots in the ancient cultures of the South Pacific but enthusiasm for the sport can be seen right in our own backyard. On Tuesday, Metroparks Toledo hosted a sold out sunset paddleboarding event at Wiregrass Lake Metropark in Holland that drew many attendees to learn about the peaceful water based activity that involves sitting, standing, or kneeling on a surfboard-like piece of buoyant material and paddling or propelling oneself with a long oar. “This differs from canoeing and kayaking because you are more likely to get in the water or get wet,” said Jessica Schaefer, an outdoor skills interpreter at the Metroparks who ran the event, during which attendees could choose to paddle off on their own or stay close to a naturalist to learn more about the lake and its place in the ecosystem of the Oak Openings region. The probability of getting wet informs a couple things about the program, Schaefer added, including the time of year it is offered (mostly in the summer months before the water gets really cold) and where it is offered — at Wiregrass and Blue Creek Metropark in Whitehouse.

Freighter voyage returns as top prize in Great Lakes museum's raffle
A multiday trip for two aboard a working Great Lakes freighter is once again being offered as a top prize for the National Museum of the Great Lakes’ fund-raising raffle. “We are really excited to have it back” after a three-year hiatus prompted by the coronavirus pandemic, Kate Fineske, the Toledo museum’s executive director, said Wednesday afternoon. Museum officials greatly appreciated that other businesses, including the American Queen cruise line that operates Great Lakes tours, stepped in to offer prize trips, Ms. Fineske said, during the years that freighter operator Interlake Steamship Co. put a hold on having visitors aboard its ships. But a drop in revenue, she said, clearly demonstrated that the freighter trips, which aren’t available to the general public any other way, were the raffles’ big draw.
