Two Big Lots stores in Northeast Wisconsin to close
Big Lots announced it would close 149 stores in 28 states earlier this year and citing inflation and competitive difficulties as the cause. “While we made substantial progress on improving our business operations in Q1, we missed our sales goals due largely to a continued pullback in consumer spending by our core customers, particularly in high ticket discretionary items,” President and CEO Bruce Thorn announced in June.

Goats fight against invasive species in Whiting
STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAW) - A new environmental regeneration project began Wednesday in the village of Whiting. After months of planning, 53 goats arrived at the Whiting Water Treatment Plant to begin chowing away on invasive species. Over several months, the animals will clear invasive species from Whiting vegetation to allow native plants to grow.

Marathon County moves toward working with Wausau on homelessness
Marathon County’s Health and Human Services Committee on Wednesday directed the county administrator to work with Wausau and form a joint task force on homelessness. The committee issued the directive after Administrator Lance Leonhard shared a draft charter of the task force. Leonhard said he will hold discussions with Mayor Doug Diny and City Council President Lisa Rasmussen to refine the draft so that they all agree on the task force’s goals, its mission and its composition.
Remains identified of Wisconsin soldier killed in Korean War
(WLUK) -- The remains of a Wisconsin soldier who was reported missing in action nearly 75 years ago during the Korean War have been identified. U.S. Army Cpl. Robert P. Raess, 21, of Dodgeville, was accounted for March 26, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced Tuesday. Scientists used anthropological analysis, mitochondrial DNA analysis and circumstantial evidence to identify Raess's remains.
