SAULT STE. MARIE — This weekend, residents and visitors will be celebrating 141 years of Rudyard during the annual Summerfest celebration.

Summerfest began in 1983 to mark the the 100th anniversary of Rudyard's founding. Over the last 40 years, the event has included several new aspects that bring people into the community from far and wide.

"It's a wonderful event each year, we get so many people," said township office manager Kathy Treml. "Lots of people that grew up here come home and bring their families for all the different events involved."

Hundreds are expected to be in attendance, with events like the car show bringing in participants from across the country.

Some of the larger events include the Summerfest Parade and the presentation of the Citizen of the Year and Business of the Year awards.

The awards are meant to help show recognition for outstanding members of the community and the contributions they make throughout the year.

The Citizen of the Year award is being presented to Orv Kabat, an educator who came to Rudyard from Michigan State University more than 20 years ago. Kabat teaches agriculture at the local high school and is involved with programs to help adults with their education.

"He's been up here a long time. He loves to serve his church and he's dedicated to his family life," said Treml. "For 20 years he's been doing things in the community for adults and children alike."

The Business of the Year award will be presented to Mayer Pump Service. From supporting youth programs and helping establish various sports teams for the community, Mayer Pump Service has become known for helping out individuals in their time of need.

"They've done a lot of good things for the community over the last many years, but over the last year, it's been quite noticeable that they are always there when someone needs help," said Treml.

Some of the other major events taking place during the festival include an annual chicken dinner hosted by the Rudyard Fire Department that raises funds for local emergency services. Some events, such as the mud run, antique tractor pull and others, require registration.

People will also be able to see events like the chainsaw carving contest, family movie night and various sport activities.

"There's something for everyone, and lots of really nice people, lots of smiling faces," said Treml. "You'll probably see somebody you know, and if you don't, you'll meet new people that are friendly."

Summerfest takes place in downtown Rudyard, starting with the Wings of History event at Kincheloe Air Force Base at 5 p.m. on July 25. Events will continue through Sunday, July 28.
