Sault Ste. Marie man given maximum sentence for sexually assaulting granddaughter
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (WLUC) - An 85-year-old Sault Ste. Marie man was sentenced to prison Tuesday for sexually assaulting his granddaughter for years. Joseph Aloysius Nolan Jr., 85, was sentenced to serve a minimum of 71 months and a maximum of 15 years in prison for three felonies, to which he previously pled guilty. Those counts include one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct (a 15-year felony) and two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

SAULT STE. MARIE — The tribe has spoken and Austin Lowes will remain chairman following Thursday's election. On June 27, the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians held its general election for chairman and board of directors. The results of the election are unofficial and still need to be certified.

RAPID RIVER — Ann Helen Scizak passed away peacefully in her home on July 1, 2024 following a brief battle with cancer. Ann was born on October 22, 1947 to Leslie and Eudene MacDonald and grew up in St. Ignace, Michigan. Ann graduated from LaSelle High School in St. Ignace in 1965 where she was a cheerleader and the homecoming queen. Her classmates described her as the sweetest and sharpest girl in the class.
Registration open for Higher Orbits’ space camp for kids in Sault Ste. Marie
SAULT STE. MARIE — Higher Orbits’ “Go for Launch” returns to Sault Ste. Marie in a few weeks, and they’re looking for students interested in space. Higher Orbits is a non-profit organization with the mission of promoting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through space exploration. In 2023, Team Space Shell 6 from Sault Area Schools won the event. Earlier this year, the six students on the team went to Cape Canaveral, Florida to watch the launch of a rocket with their winning experiment onboard. Chris Olson, Chippewa County EDC president, said interest in the space industry growing.
