Today’s national day is National Wildland Firefighter Day

EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) – I have always had a fascination with national holidays that go unnoticed. They can be super quirky, but often times they highlight certain groups or jobs that deserve recognition.

I will start a daily post on the different “national days” throughout the year.

Today is National Wildland Firefighter Day.

July 2 honors the dedicated personnel who coordinate their efforts to protect the nation’s wildlands and remember the sacrifices made each time a firefighter steps into a wildland fire.

This is such a fitting national holiday as our region’s brave men and women have valiantly fought off two wildfires that have devasted our sister community in Ruidoso, New Mexico.

We have seen nearly 1,000 firefighters battle this monstrous blaze that has scorched over 20,000 acres.

There were 18 crews, four helicopters, 31 engines, four bulldozers and 10 water tenders used at one point to put out the Salt and South Fork Fires, which are now nearly 85 percent contained.
