Update: Heat advisory for Central Alabama until Tuesday night
An updated heat advisory was issued by the National Weather Service on Tuesday at 12:42 p.m. in effect until 9 p.m. for Sumter, Greene, Hale, Perry, Marengo, Dallas, Autauga, Lowndes, Elmore, Montgomery, Macon, Bullock, Russell, Pike and Barbour counties. The weather service says, "Heat index values up to 106 degrees."

Editor’s Note: Russell County has a long history that is important to the state of Alabama and its evolvement from an area described in the book “Russell County in Retrospect” by Anne Kendrick Walker as a “barbaric land” to what it is today. Many of the people who set their roots in the county in its early days, including the state’s first Territorial Delegate to the United States Congress, important Native Americans who paid with their lives to cede land that created the county, a family that started a place of higher learning in south Russell County that later led to the establishment of one of the state’s most known institutions of education today, and a former slave who placed a monument to honor his former owner, all are very much important to the formation of Alabama. The story that follows is another of a series to inform you – our readers – about the history of Russell County.

Columbia Man Arrested in Russell County on Trespassing & Other Charges
A Columbia man was arrested on Thursday, July 11, 2024 in Russell County on Trespassing, Menacing and Wanton Endangerment charges... Zackary West, 18, was taken into custody by Deputy Barber with the Russell County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday night. West was charged with Public Intoxication of a Controlled Substance (Excludes Alcohol), Criminal Trespassing 2nd Degree, Menacing, and Wanton Endangerment 2nd degree. He was lodged in the Russell County Detention Center.
