PHENIX CITY, Ala. (WTVM) - A Smiths Station man who is behind bars and charged with capital murder made his first appearance in court Thursday morning. Jeffery Spurlock is accused of shooting and killing Jacob Sanes at a Phenix City bar back in May. The Russell County District Attorney’s Office is seeking the death penalty.

Community Events: A Grand Time for Church Ladies, Scholarships, Tea Party, Nurses Conference, and Juneteenth Celebration
Crawford held its First Annual Juneteenth in celebration of the new federal holiday. The event, held at the Crawford Walking Trail on June 19, honored minority small businesses, and there were vendors selling amazing food and other items. The day was cloudy, but it was still hot. People walked around the walking trail while enjoying snow cones and other cooling treats. Old friends and family gathered, trading stories and catching up. Next year should be even bigger, so mark your calendars.

Editor’s Note: Russell County has a long history that is important to the state of Alabama and its evolvement from an area described in the book “Russell County in Retrospect” by Anne Kendrick Walker as a “barbaric land” to what it is today. Many of the people who set their roots in the county in its early days, including the state’s first Territorial Delegate to the United States Congress, important Native Americans who paid with their lives to cede land that created the county, a family that started a place of higher learning in south Russell County that later led to the establishment of one of the state’s most known institutions of education today, and a former slave who placed a monument to honor his former owner, all are very much important to the formation of Alabama. The story that follows is another of a series to inform you – our readers – about the history of Russell County.
