RUSSELL, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Corporation Commission has awarded a grant to the city of Russell.

The city has received $122,783 through the KCC Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant, which is focused on projects in rural communities in Kansas. The funds will be used to upgrade city streetlights to more energy-efficient technology.

“The City of Russell is honored to receive this grant, which will allow us to make significant improvements to our city’s infrastructure,” said Mayor Jim Cross. “Upgrading to energy-efficient streetlights is a major step forward for our community. It helps us reduce energy consumption and costs while enhancing lighting quality throughout the community.”

Work is expected to begin in August and be completed in October. Through the grant, 311 streetlights in Russell will be replaced.

Funding for the $1.9 million Block Grant from the Department of Energy comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
