APS students, families take Backpack Adventure at zoo
AKRON — On the afternoons of Aug. 20 and 21, Akron Public Schools students in kindergarten through fifth grade and their families participated in the district’s annual Backpack Adventure at the Akron Zoo. During the free event, each child had the opportunity to choose a new backpack, run in an obstacle course, play games, enjoy music with a DJ and visit the zoo’s many animals. Kindergarten enrollment was also available on-site. Superintendent Michael Robinson chatted with participants, and many district teachers and staff members gave out snacks and school supplies to help students prepare for their first day of school this week. School mascots were in attendance and high school bands performed, and families also received swag bags and giveaways from community organizations like the Akron-Summit County Public Library, Akron Police Department, the Cleveland Browns’ Stay in the Game program, Summit County Sheriff’s Office and area health services.
