RUSTON, La. (KTVE/KARD) — The City of Ruston is set to suspend its household recycling program on August 1st.

For one month, the search for another company to accept Ruston recyclables has been unsuccessful. The June fire in Kilgore, Texas that destroyed the processing center the city had been using is the cause of this possible suspension.

Ruston mayor Ronny Walker has been speaking with different companies, trying to find a solution.

The closest we found so far is 3 hours. The question with them, and they’re going to take a sample trailer next week, they need to see if they can handle the volume that we have, adding to what they already have.

The city picks up recyclables on Thursday and Friday of this week, and it will be part of the normal garbage pickup that goes to Union Parish landfill. According to Lincoln Parish Journal, those who have been recycling will not be charged until it is picked up again for that reason.

We’re suspending that charge starting August 1st. So, they won’t be charged August, or however long it takes.

Ruston collects around 150 tons of recyclables per year. Walker hopes to have something worked out within the next six months, at the least.
