Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Beginning of International Dark Sky Discovery Center Construction

    2024-04-12

Fountain Hills, Arizona witnessed a momentous occasion as the International Dark Sky Discovery Center (IDSDC) commenced construction on its groundbreaking observatory on April 8, 2024, coinciding with a spectacular solar eclipse. Situated at 13001 N. La Montana Drive, the innovative observatory is the brainchild of SWABACK Architects + Planners and is being brought to life by McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.

The $25 million, 23,000-square-foot facility will house a cutting-edge 27.5-inch PlaneWave telescope within its impressive 20.5-foot domed observatory. Complementing this astronomical marvel is a state-of-the-art, 65-seat planetarium. Moreover, the center will feature a versatile auditorium accommodating up to 150 guests, alongside a captivating “Night Sky Experience” exhibit space equipped with interactive educational and historical displays.

Joe Bill, President of the IDSDC Board, remarked, “What better way to inaugurate the construction of the International Dark Sky Discovery Center than amidst such a rare celestial phenomenon, under the expansive skies of Fountain Hills. The next such eclipse won't occur for another 20 years. My aspiration is that by then, the IDSDC will stand as an Arizona landmark, revered globally as a hub enabling sky enthusiasts of all ages to delve deeper into the wonders of the universe.”

Nestled in Fountain Hills, Arizona, the IDSDC enjoys a distinctive setting as one of only two International Dark Sky Communities adjacent to a metropolitan area, all while preserving minimal light pollution and optimal conditions for stargazing. In January 2018, Fountain Hills attained recognition as the 17th International Dark Sky Community worldwide.

Beyond its astronomical pursuits, the center aims to raise awareness about the significance of preserving dark skies and the adverse effects of light pollution on humans, wildlife, and scientific research. Catering primarily to K-12 communities in Arizona, the IDSDC will offer a plethora of activities, educational programs, and events. Equipped with Greater Phoenix's inaugural research-grade telescope, it will unveil celestial wonders obscured by burgeoning light pollution.

Justin Adams, McCarthy's project director, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to this extraordinary venture. “We are privileged to play a role in bringing such a unique experience to fruition for Arizona residents and the Fountain Hills community,” he stated. “We fully support the IDSDC's mission of advancing research, education, and dark sky preservation in one of the nation's select Dark Sky communities.”

SWABACK Architects + Planners boasts a rich history with Fountain Hills spanning over three decades. Jon Bernhard, design architect and Partner-in-charge at SWABACK, emphasized the personal significance of the project, stating, “As a resident of Fountain Hills for 34 years, I am deeply invested in this remarkable facility. The Discovery Center promises to be an exciting and invaluable recreational and educational asset for both residents and visitors alike. I eagerly anticipate sharing its diverse range of activities and functions with friends and family.”

Funding for the Discovery Center has been secured through the diligent efforts of the IDSDC Board. Currently, the board is actively seeking an additional $8 million for exclusive naming rights to the entire center, as well as $2 million for naming rights to specific elements such as the observatory, theater, and Night Sky Experience exhibit hall.
