Banks competed to be Lawton’s first
LAWTON – A race to be the first bank in the new prairie town of Lawton turned out to be a little tricky. Although the U.S. government adopted a lottery system to open the Kiowa-Comanche- Apache Reservation on Aug. 6, 1901, instead of the chaotic land runs, anxious homesteaders and entrepreneurs had been lurking and scouting the area for over a year, reported local newspapers at the time.
Lawton librarian honored for her integrity
Lawton librarian Elizabeth Knighton said that f inding money in a book has “always been on my bucket list.”. She can now write that one off. An employee in the Community Engagement Division of the Lawton Public Library, Knighton was going through a boxful of paperback books that had been donated to the libr ary recently when she noticed something in one of them.
580 Pitch contest awards thousands to local entrepreneurs
LAWTON – Four new businesses walked away with thousands of dollars in prize money to move their enterprises forward following a competition. Thursday’s 580 Pitch, hosted by Great Plains Technology Center, is an initiative to boost local economic development. The early-stage business owners applied for the funds to grow or help launch their enterprise.
Ardmore man arrested for damaging vehicle, gas station pump
ARDMORE, Okla. (KXII) - An Ardmore man faces several felony charges after damaging a vehicle and a gas station pump, according to court documents. The court documents alleged that on Friday, Tevin Jacobs caused over $5,000 of damage to another man’s SUV at a Valero at Wallace Street and Chickasaw Boulevard.

SAPULPA – Officials with the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum are reminding the public they have less than two months to take part in the third-annual vintage car rides. The vintage car rides take place every Saturday morning starting at the museum. Currently, guests can ride in a 1923 Packard and drive to Pretty Water Lake. A driver is provided and the car rides take place between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., weather permitting. The rides will run through the end of September.

Wynona offers blended learning, full virtual enrollment
The Wynona Public School District has joined the THRIVE Learning Collaborative, Oklahoma’s only public virtual school cooperative. Pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students attending on-site at Wynona will continue to be provided with traditional full-day instruction by teachers present in the classroom, while students attending on-site in grades 6-12 will be provided blended learning options. Blended learning for these students will include a combination of traditional coursework with on-site instruction, in addition to virtual courses with live online instruction provided by certified THRIVE instructors.
