Oklahoma’s official entry into the Southeastern Conference got the Hardee’s coffee club away from politics and the weather for a few minutes the other morning. Eubanks: Council plans shelter discussion
Interim City Manager Jerry Eubanks said Saturday, July 6 that an item would be on the agenda for the Tuesday, July 9 meeting of the Pawhuska City Council, calling for a discussion regarding the new animal shelter that opened in the spring of this year.On June 18, following an official investigation, District Attorney Mike Fisher declined to prosecute anyone regarding an apparent improper disposal of the remains of several animals. Fisher found that the situation was "technically a violation of the law," but he also concluded that animals involved had been humanely euthanized by a veterinarian and an attempt had been made to properly dispose of the bodies.Michael Martin, an investigator for the D.A., on May 31 received a call about several dogs possibly being shot and illegally disposed of. In the course of his investigation, Martin reportedly learned the dogs had not been shot, but had been euthanized (or had died of disease) and were later disposed of in garbage bags that were placed in a pit on a piece pf property located at 4300 McKenzie Road and owned by a business named WWW Oil.Investigator Martin said, in his report on the case, that Brandon Owens, an employee of WWW Oil, said his mother, Brenda Sue "Susie" Owens, called him and said that she needed help disposing of dog remains. The plan was to use a backhoe to cover with dirt several trash bags containing the dog remains, Brandon Owens reportedly told Martin. But the backhoe was broken down and a replacement part was needed to repair it.Martin gathered copies of records that had been kept regarding the animals. The records detailed the types, ages and health problems of each animal. There was also information about the circumstances under which each animal was euthanized or died of other causes.Martin said, in his report, that Susie Owens, who manages the animal shelter, was unaware that dog bodies had not been properly disposed of. Martin signed off June 11 on his findings.Again, no charges have been filed.Pawhuska city government financially supports the operation of the shelter, and Mayor Susan Bayro has expressed a desire to have an official City Council discussion of the shelter.

Taking Stock of Big XII Transfer Classes: Oklahoma State
For all intents and purposes college basketball's 2024 transfer season is over although some schools could still add one or two more players prior to tipping off in November. However, in this age of highly paid transfers, many coaches could opt for quality over quantity, meaning they'll concentrate their NIL funds on several elite transfer prospects rather than scatter those finite moneys over more marginal prospects in an attempt to fill all 13 scholarship spots. They may prefer to roll the dice on injury and other attrition with nine or 10 scholarship players. Texas Tech, incidentally, has filled only 11 scholarship positions as of this writing and could stand pat. This is a calculated risk Grant McCasland and other coaches may be willing to run.
