    Washington, D.C. Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

    Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs (MOLA) in Washington, D.C. are kicking off celebrations for Hispanic Heritage Month which officially begins on September 15, 2024, and will run through October 15. The Bowser Administration will be hosting various events throughout the month in Celebration of Washington, D.C.'s Diverse Latino Communities.

    MOLA will partner with District agencies and community-based organizations to sponsor events to which the community is encouraged to participate.

    They will start with the 4th Annual "Mi Pequeno El Salvador" Festival and Hispanice Heritage Month Kickoff starting at noon on Sunday, September 15, at Lamont Plaza in Ward 1.

    Mayor Bowser was quoted as saying: “From small businesses to artistic and cultural contributions, the impact our Latino communities is woven into the fabric of our city. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the resilience and achievements of Latino residents who continue to drive the District forward.” [from the website]

    Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 as a nationally recognized week-long celebration. It was expanded in 1988 to a month- long observance.

    The Latino population in Washington, D.C. is currently the third-largest ethnic group in the city. They have contributed in countless ways to the advancement of D.C.
