Wood, a biomedical engineer, was previously an associate professor of nanoscience and biomedical engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
Maxwell's closing strawberry farm in Cape Elizabeth after 51 years
CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine — Popular pick-your-own strawberry spot Maxwell's Farm in Cape Elizabeth says it has decided to close after more than five decades in operation. Maxwell's Farm posted on social media Sunday announcing 2024 will be the strawberry farm's final season after 51 years, citing "no single reason" for its closure, but a "myriad of realities" that had built over time.
Registration open for week of community free blueberry picking at Beech Hill
ROCKPORT — “The ‘Blues’ will be ready early again this year,” said Coastal Mountains Land Trust, in a news release. CMLT invites everyone to pick berries at Beech Hill Preserve. As CMLT did last year, instead of selling blueberries, it will offer a week of community free picks, from Sunday, July 21 through Saturday, July 27, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., each day. An evening pick will be held on Thursday, July 25, from 5 - 7 p.m.

Fire marshal's office conducting arson investigation following Rockland incident
ROCKLAND, Maine — Officials are conducting an arson investigation after discovering Molotov cocktail-type devices on railroad tracks in Rockland. The Rockland Police Department said on social media Saturday police and the Rockland Fire & EMS Department responded to a report of a fire on railroad tracks near Pleasant Street around 6:30 p.m.

Biddeford to clear homeless camps, opens new emergency shelter
BIDDEFORD (WGME) -- Biddeford officials are clearing out homeless encampments throughout the city. They are asking people who live there to move into a new emergency shelter. Last week, Biddeford Mayor Martin Grohman said Seeds of Hope opened its overnight shelter at 35 South Street. About a dozen people have already moved in.

Farm and fiber mill in Troy enters first summer running on renewable energy
TROY — Some people look forward to Independence Day as the start of the more leisurely days of summer, a time for vacations, hikes, and perhaps time at the coast. Many Maine farmers, on the other hand, are heading into their busiest season with long workdays ahead. At Moorit Hill Farm and Fiber in the Central Maine town of Troy, this July will also bring long days of energy production. Earlier this year the farmers added a 41-kW rooftop solar array, paid for in part with a Rural Energy for America Program grant. The grant was awarded by USDA Rural Development, whose Maine State Director, Rhiannon Hampson, toured the farm and fiber mill Wednesday, July 3.
