Sheldon, Iowa — Pretty obviously, the month of June 2024 was much wetter than normal in Sheldon. It was also a little bit warmer than normal. According to the weather facts collected by KIWA Radio, the highest high was 94 degrees, recorded on June 24. The lowest high temperature was 66 degrees, recorded on June 20th.
Sheldon police chief submits resignation
SHELDON—Sheldon Police Department chief Scott Burtch has submitted his resignation with the city. Burtch will remain the chief until Aug. 30, when his resignation will be effective. Burtch submitted his future resignation to Sheldon city manager Sam Kooiker on Monday, July 1, and the city council will review it during its meeting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10.
Smithfield Donates Pork to Help in Northwest Iowa
(NAFB.com) – Smithfield Foods delivered 34,000 pounds of pork to Rock Valley, Iowa, to provide free, restaurant-quality meals to victims, first responders, and volunteers impacted by severe flooding in Northwest Iowa. Smithfield, with more than 600 employees in nearby Sioux Center and Orange City, Iowa, donated items like loins, ribs, and pork chops that will provide over 140,000 servings of protein. “Recent catastrophic flooding has left many of our Northwest Iowa neighbors without basic necessities like electricity, drinking water, and food,” says Jonathan Toms, senior community development manager for Smithfield Foods. “By partnering with a non-profit like Mercy Chefs, we’re able to provide support and hope for our neighbors in times of need as the community continues to recover from storm damage.” Mercy Chef’s mobile kitchen will serve restaurant-quality meals to anyone in need in the Rock Valley community. The team will also distribute meals to those unable to make it there.
Register for Orientation for a Free High School Equivalency Diploma at Greene County Career Academy
There is an opportunity in Jefferson for adults who are looking to get their high school diploma. The Greene County Career Academy has several classes for individuals to earn their High School Equivalency Diploma for free. The next orientation is scheduled for Monday at 4pm at the Career Academy. The classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-6pm and are taught by Iowa Central Community College. Attendees are asked to use the north parking lot and enter through door N5. These classes are for people who are 17 and older.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in the Middle District of Florida has announced the arrests of two men, Brock David Fischer of Robins, Iowa, and Miguel Angel Fortier, Jr. from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in connection with an elaborate return-fraud scheme.
