Mexican restaurant chain closes all remaining local sites
Rubio's Coastal Grill has closed its five remaining sites in the Sacramento area, according to the Mexican restaurant chain's website.<\p> The website says "location closed" for two Rubio's restaurants in Roseville, and one location each in Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove and Natomas.<\p>
In Solano County, a potential Sacramento competitor is planned
West of Rio Vista and southeast of Fairfield in unincorporated Solano County, an economic competitor to Sacramento may soon rise out of what is now low-lying farmland with a panorama of white windmills.<\p> By year's end, about 25,000 acres could receive approval to be transformed into a new development its backers say will reflect both the best of California and its current needs: affordable middle-class homes, thousands of well paying jobs and hundreds of acres of open space.<\p>
Small-business grants you can apply for this month
Despite the seemingly endless number of challenges that come along with being a small-business owner, the vast majority of entrepreneurs recommend it. <\p> A survey of employed adults and small-business owners by Justworks and The Harris Poll earlier this year revealed that 93% of small-business owners would recommend business ownership to others, with 59% saying it was easier than they had anticipated. <\p>
Walmart planning $6 million remodel of local store
Walmart Inc. is planning to remodel its Folsom Supercenter store and bolster its online grocery pickup experience for customers.<\p> The Bentonville, Arkansas-based retail giant is seeking approvals to construct a new 3,500-square-foot wing to the southwest of its current building at 1018 Riley St. that would be dedicated to its online grocery pickup service, along with updates to the surrounding parking area to allow easier access for employees to the pickup parking spaces. The parking stalls currently being used for the service in front of the store would be converted into additional parking stalls for disabled customers. <\p>
This discount retailer could fill two former 99 Cents Only spaces
Discount retailer Dollar Tree Inc. has acquired rights to nearly half of 99 Cents Only Stores LLC's former locations as part of a bankruptcy sale, which includes leases for two stores in Sacramento.<\p> 99 Cents Only Stores put its real estate assets up for sale in April after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier in the month. Those assets included leases for 333 of its former stores and 44 company-owned retail locations and development sites throughout Arizona, California, Nevada and Texas. <\p>
Tribe that owns Sky River Casino acquires 30 more acres in Elk Grove
Wilton Rancheria continues to scoop up land in and around its Sky River Casino in Elk Grove, announcing Friday the acquisition of 30 more acres.<\p> Unlike a previous purchase, though, this property is not contiguous to the casino site itself, but farther south, northeast of where Ranch Parkway meets Kammerer Road.<\p>
Seattle-area company buys apartment property in Sacramento County
Weidner Apartment Homes has expanded its presence in the Sacramento region, closing escrow this week on a 264-unit property near the Vineyard area of Sacramento County.<\p> Kirkland, Washington-based Weidner bought the renamed Artisan 8282, at 8282 Calvine Road, from Sequoia Equities, which owned it since 2017. <\p>
Rocklin retail project should break ground later this year
Work on a long-awaited retail center in the Whitney Ranch area of Rocklin should get underway later this year, anchored by a Nugget Market.<\p> But Rocklin leaders have also hailed the project as important for other reasons, including its promise to curb sales tax "leakage" to other communities.<\p>
Rancho Cordova insurance broker makes 10 acquisitions in May
Fast-growing Inszone Insurance Services announced the acquisition of 10 independent brokerages in the month of May.<\p> Rancho Cordova-based Inszone has been growing into a nationwide brand through nearly 130 acquisitions and organic growth in just over a decade.<\p>
Report shows local clean-tech industry lost jobs over past two years
The cluster of clean technology and green technology companies in the Sacramento region has recently seen declines in revenue and jobs, according to the 2024 CleanStart Progress Report, but the momentum for clean-oriented startups finding money going forward still looks positive.<\p> Despite the loss of nearly half of the companies in the clean sector in the region over two years, the future looks bright because of large new potential funding sources, said Gary Simon, chairman of the nonprofit CleanStart business accelerator.<\p>
More workers are staying with their current employer in 2024
Most U.S. employees are now choosing to stay with their jobs instead of looking for new ones, a sharp turnaround from the job reshuffling that was common during the Covid-19 pandemic. <\p> A new survey by global advisory firm WTW found 72% of employees are choosing to stay with their employer — up substantially from the 53% who said the same thing in 2022. Back then, about 25% of workers were open to job offers, compared to just 11% now.<\p>
Prospective homebuyers are missing out as sellers cut their prices
The chronically troublesome housing market is seeing more price drops, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into relief for homebuyers.<\p> Data from real estate firm Redfin Corp. shows 6.4% of active listings on the platform had a price drop through the week ending May 26. While that's not a massive portion of listings, the percentage is substantially higher than the 4.4% of listings with price drops recorded during the same time in 2023.<\p>

Why this land outside Auburn won't be developed
A decades-old plan to develop estate homes overlooking the American River outside Auburn has given way to keeping 1,566 acres mostly as they are now.<\p> Placer Land Trust and Trust for Public Land announced they conserved river canyon lands along the river's North Fork and Lake Clementine, after buying them from private developers.<\p>
How this riverfront property in West Sac can now be developed
More West Sacramento riverfront is opened up for future development, with a ribbon cutting Thursday at the south end of the Bridge District.<\p> Riverfront Street's new extension is only about .15 of a mile, but it creates new access to land fronting the river south of where Highway 50 crosses through the city.<\p>
