Sacramento Kings' NFC Title Game Taunt Backfires

Using the Super Bowl-bound San Francisco 49ers in an attempt to troll visitors from Detroit proved to be fool's gold for the Sacramento Kings.

Sacramento hosted the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night, a de facto appetizer for the championship main course looming this coming Sunday. Inspired by the 49ers' mastery of a Motor City squad, namely the comeback victory in the NFC Championship Game, the Kings looped one of the showdown's major highlights and turning points on the video board at Golden 1 Center.

As the woebegone Pistons warmed up, they were greeted by a reminder of the latest disaster in Detroit sports, namely the Brandon Aiyuk catch off the helmet of Lions defender Kindle Vildor in the third quarter. That catch immediately preceded an Aiyuk touchdown and was part of a 27-point inferno that saw San Francisco turn a 24-7 deficit into a 34-31 win.

The visual prank was captured by Kyle Madson, a radio host on KIFM, a Sacramento-based ESPN affiliate.

Alas for the Kings, they were unable to follow in the 49ers' footsteps: behind a career-best 37 points for Jaden Ivey, the Pistons, perhaps inspired by revenge for their maned gridiron brothers, took a 133-120 final.

Detroit picked up only its seventh win of the season at Golden 1 Center. Perhaps vengeance for the Lions began a bit of a trend: win No. 8 came in the latter half of a back-to-back, as the Pistons prevailed 128-122 in overtime over the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday. The latter victory afforded the Pistons (8-43) their first pair of consecutive victories since October.

The 49ers will look to earn football's ultimate victory on Sunday when they face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas (6:30 p.m. ET, CBS). Meanwhile, the Pistons will go for their first three-game winning streak on Saturday against the Los Angeles Clippers (3:30 p.m. ET, Bally Sports Detroit).
