Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is moving his children back to Marin County, California , where he and his wife attended school.

The move comes ahead of the next school year, with the governor’s oldest son set to start his freshman high school year. This move will allow him to continue his education without the risk of disrupting his education at the start of the spring 2027 semester, when Newsom’s term as governor ends, according to two people familiar with the family’s plan.

“To ensure continuity in their children’s education, the family will split their time between Sacramento and Marin heading into the coming academic year,” said Izzy Gardon, a spokeswoman for the governor.

The Newsom family is not seeking to rent or purchase a new home in Marin County and will have their four children stay with extended family in the area instead. The county is the same area where Newsom and his wife, Jennifer, raised their family before he became governor in 2019.

Newsom is not the first California governor to travel a long distance to and from Sacramento, as previous Govs. Arnold Schwarzenegger , a Republican, and Jerry Brown, a Democrat, did the same.

The move comes as Newsom is stumping for President Joe Biden and his reelection bid this November, with one report stating that Newsom will appear at the first presidential debate as a surrogate for the president. The governor was rumored at one point to be a possible replacement for Biden in the 2024 election, though he has routinely denied this possibility.

The Washington Examiner has contacted Newsom’s office for comment.
