(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Zoo has welcomed several flamingo chicks .

The organization announced in a Friday morning Facebook post that its Caribbean flamingos had welcomed some new babies.

These animals in California are capable of causing human-wildlife conflicts

A picture shared by the zoo shows a flamingo chick being cared for by an adult flamingo.

The flamingo chicks have white feathers, and will not change to their famous pink color until they are one to two years old , after a continuous diet of foods with carotenoids, which are produced in many plants.

‘Please don’t plant these species in California,’ CDFW says

In the meantime, the chicks will be fed what is known as crop milk, which their parents produce.

According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, parent flamingos can lose some of their pink color while raising their chicks since they are providing them with their food. They regain their color once the chicks are self-sufficient.

The Sacramento Zoo has several Caribbean flamingos , which a group of is called a flamboyance.

California is the ‘sole producer’ of these 17 crops

During the early July heat wave, the zoo has reduced its hours, opening only through 2 p.m. until July 9.
