While college basketball doesn’t tip off until this Fall, fans can get their fix with the NBA Summer League beginning on Saturday. The California Classic tips off with four teams participating in both San Francisco and Sacramento.

And one former UNC basketball player will be coaching a team.

The Sacramento Kings will be coached by former UNC forward and national champion Jawad Williams. The team made the decision to allow Williams to get some coaching experience during the NBA’s Summer League here in July.

Williams spoke to the media, saying he was thankful for the opportunity that Mike Brown has given him for the California Classic.

After four years at North Carolina, Williams went undrafted and played most of his career overseas. He did play two seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, playing alongside LeBron James.

He was named the player development coach for the Kings in July of 2023 and is now taking a step forward in his coaching career.
