(FOX40.COM) — Crews with the Sacramento Fire Department responded to a four-alarm commercial fire in Sacramento on Thursday.

Officials said a single fire engine was dispatched to a reported trash fire on Florin Perkins Road and Fruitridge Road around 5 p.m. Once they pulled out of the firehouse, crews said they immediately saw a large column of black smoke and labeled the fire a two-alarm fire.

Once the fire department arrived at the scene, they quickly realized they needed to upgrade to a 3-alarm for more resources. “At that point, there were about 100 firefighters on the scene…The main focus is to just contain this to the property of the recycling yard,” officials said.

Just after 7 p.m., officials upgraded the fire from a three-alarm to a four-alarm fire.

Officials with the Sacramento Fire Department said to FOX40.com, “This is a massive fire.”

Video captured by a FOX40 News team member of the fire showed thick, black smoke filling the air quickly.

Fire crews said they threw four aerial streams on the fire, each carrying 1,000 gallons per minute. Officials added that Union Pacific tracks in the area have been notified to shut down. “This will be an extended operation. Road closures will remain in place for the next 2-4 hours,” the Sacramento Fire Department added.

Facebook users chimed in immediately with comments like, “Drove by [the fire] and can see the smoke all the way to Sunrise Boulevard.” Another user said, “I can see black smoke from my house and I’m in West Sacramento.”

Someone else said those in Stockton, which is about 50 miles south of Sacramento, could see the smoke from the city.

No injuries have been reported in the fire and its cause is still unknown.
