The I-5 closures are a part of Caltrans’ FixSac5 project that seeks to use about $25 million to repair pavement and “deteriorating asphalt” in the Natomas area.
Beginning Friday, July 26 at 10 p.m., and continuing through Monday, July 29, the southbound I-5 at the I-80 interchange will be reduced to two lanes. Caltrans said a reduction to one lane is possible between midnight and 5 a.m. during that time.
Northbound I-5 at Garden Highway will likewise be reduced to two lanes from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
Additionally, the southbound I-5 connector ramp to eastbound I-80 will be closed during the weekend at the following times:
10 p.m. Friday, July 26 to 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27
10 p.m. Saturday, July 27 to 10 a.m. Sunday, July 28
10 p.m. Sunday, July 28 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29
A detour will be provided for those looking to get from southbound I-5 to eastbound I-80 at the following location: Take the westbound I-80 connector, stay in the right lane, and exit I-80 at W. El Camino Avenue. Make a left onto West El Camino Avenue and enter the loop onramp to eastbound I-80.
“Drivers and airport employees scheduled for flights out of Sacramento International Airport (SMF) should leave at least 40 minutes earlier than the recommended time to be on time for flights and work shifts,” Caltrans said. “Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route around the construction work zone…[Those who choose] to use I-5 during the partial closures should expect delays and plan for additional travel times.”
The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph through the construction zone. Officers with the California Highway Patrol will be at the project site handing out tickets to drivers who are found not adhering to the reduced speed limit, Caltrans said.
