A popular Italian restaurant chain known for its family-style dining recently closed its Arden-Arcade location.

Buca di Beppo Italian Restaurant at 1249 Howe Ave. was closed as of Monday, according to the chain’s website.

The restaurant’s Facebook page updated its hours to “Permanently closed” on Sunday.

A sign on the door of the restaurant near Cal Expo announced its closure and thanked its customers for their patronage since the restaurant opened in 1999.

“We are thankful to you, our loyal guests, for giving us the opportunity to serve you,” the sign read. “It’s with great appreciation and gratitude that we say thank you for all the years.”

Why did Sacramento-area Italian restaurant close?

It wasn’t clear as of Monday why Buca di Beppo shut its doors in Arden Arcade.

Commercial real estate company Cushman and Wakefield listed the Howe Avenue restaurant for sale in August at $3.9 million.

The 8,550-square-foot retail space was priced at $3.6 million as of Monday , according to an offering memorandum by the real estate company.

At the time the Howe Avenue location was listed for sale, Cushman and Wakefield said in the document, it was one of Buca di Beppo’s “top three high performing restaurant(s).”

Buca di Beppo renewed its lease at the Howe Avenue spot in October 2019 for 10 years, according to the real estate company.

As of noon Monday, the listing did not indicate a sale of the space was pending.

A representative for Buca di Beppo’s corporate office emailed a statement to The Sacramento Bee on Monday afternoon.

“After being part of this community for 25 years, regrettably, Buca di Beppo in Sacramento has closed,” the statement read. “We thank our customers for their loyalty — it was our privilege to be the backdrop for countless gatherings and celebrations over the past two decades.”

    What is Buca di Beppo?

Buca di Beppo Italian Restaurant opened its first location in Minneapolis in 1993. The restaurant chain’s name roughly translates to “Joe’s small place” in Italian, according to its website.

The chain are now 44 locations in the United States and two in the Philippines.

The chain specializes in sharing-sized menu options, with each item designed to feed at least two people, the restaurant’s site says.

Known for its “world famous meatballs” and various Italian food staples, Buca di Beppo says its menu is “inspired by Northern and Southern Italian cuisine.”

Where are open restaurant locations in California?

Following the closure of Buca di Beppo’s Arden Arcade location, the chain has one restaurant remaining in the capital region.

As of Monday, Buca di Beppo was open at 1212 Galleria Blvd. in Roseville at the Creekside Town Center shopping center.

The chain also has two locations in the Bay Area — in Palo Alto and Campbell — and 12 sites across Southern California.
