TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A person was hospitalized after falling into a 10-foot-deep hole that opened up in Safety Harbor overnight.

The hole opened up under the sidewalk on Curlew Road just east of McMullen Booth Road around midnight, the Safety Harbor Fire Department said.

Sunstar Paramedics were initially dispatched for reports of a fall and alerted authorities of the gaping hole.

“I am not sure if the person was already out of the hole when they arrived, however, the patient was transported to the hospital for evaluation,” Safety Harbor Interim Fire Chief Andrew Hawkins said.

The hole is about 12 feet wide, 12 feet long, and 10 feet deep. The fire department said the hole is located next to a large storm drain, which is possibly the cause.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is at the scene awaiting the Department of Transportation.
