A Perfect Day at Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area

    2023-03-29

Hey there, fellow adventurers! If you're anything like me, you're always on the lookout for a new, exciting outdoor experience. Well, let me tell you about a hidden gem that I recently discovered – the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area in Arizona. This beautiful oasis offers a little bit of everything – hiking, bird watching, fishing, and even some adrenaline-pumping water sports. So, pack up your gear, and let's dive into how you can spend a fantastic day at Gila Box.

    Getting There

Located in southeastern Arizona, the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area is about 25 miles northeast of Safford. The easiest way to get there is to take US Highway 70 to Solomon, then turn north onto Swift Trail (State Route 366). After just a few miles, you'll reach the turnoff for the Gila Box. The roads are mostly dirt and gravel, so be prepared for a little bit of a bumpy ride, but trust me – it's worth it!

    Morning Hike

Start your day off by exploring some of the area's fantastic hiking trails. There are trails that cater to all skill levels, so whether you're an experienced hiker or just looking for a leisurely walk, you're sure to find something that suits you. One of my favorite trails is the Cottonwood Trail, which leads you through a lush riparian forest along the banks of the Gila River. Keep an eye out for the area's diverse wildlife, such as deer, javelinas, and even the occasional black bear!

    Picnic Lunch

After working up an appetite on the trails, it's time to refuel with a delicious picnic. There are several fantastic picnic spots throughout the conservation area, so pick your favorite and set up camp for a relaxing outdoor meal. My personal favorite spot is the Bonita Creek Day Use Area, which offers shaded picnic tables and restroom facilities. Plus, it's right next to Bonita Creek, so you can enjoy the soothing sounds of the water as you dine.

    Afternoon Fishing

If you're a fishing enthusiast, you're in for a treat! The Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area is home to some fantastic fishing spots, particularly on the Gila River and Bonita Creek. You'll find a variety of fish species, including catfish, bass, and even some rainbow trout if you're lucky. Just don't forget to bring your Arizona fishing license and make sure to follow all local regulations.

    Water Sports Fun

Now that you've had some time to relax and recharge, it's time for a little excitement! Grab your kayak or canoe and hit the water. The Gila River offers some fantastic opportunities for both flatwater and whitewater paddling. If you're new to the sport or looking for something a little more laid-back, the stretch of river near the Cottonwood Trail is perfect for a leisurely paddle. For the more experienced and daring adventurers, head further upstream to tackle the exhilarating Class II-III rapids of the Gila Box Canyon.

    Evening Bird Watching

As the day winds down, it's time to grab your binoculars and set out on a bird-watching adventure. The Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area is home to over 200 species of birds, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts. Keep an eye out for some of the area's rare and unique species, such as the yellow-billed cuckoo, the southwestern willow flycatcher, and the zone-tailed hawk. The best bird-watching spots can be found along the Cottonwood Trail and the Bonita Creek areas.

As the sun sets over the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, you'll no doubt be feeling a sense of accomplishment and awe at the beauty of this incredible Arizona oasis. So pack up your gear, say goodbye to this fantastic outdoor playground, and start planning your next adventure – because there's always more to explore!
