Elyria firefighters rescue teen who jumped from bridge into the Black River
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Elyria firefighters rescued a 17-year-old boy who jumped into the Black River off the Lake Avenue Bridge on Wednesday. Firefighter were called about 7:25 p.m. for reports that someone had jumped off the bridge into the Black River, near West Falls. When fire officials arrived, they went into the river to prevent the teen from going under water, according to Joseph Pronesti, the Elyria fire chief.

Aurora man charged in $700,000 mail theft and check fraud scheme
CLEVELAND, Ohio — An Aurora man was charged Wednesday in connection with a $700,000 check-forging scheme in which he used checks stolen from the U.S. mail. Darmani Hawkins, 20, recruited mail carriers and others via social media to steal checks, forge them and cash the fake ones at real banks, according to court records.

Cleveland firefighter dies due to occupational cancer
CLEVELAND — A firefighter with the Cleveland Fire Department has died due to occupational cancer, Cleveland Fire Fighters IAFF Local 93 stated in a Facebook post. Firefighter Shawn Calvey, 37, was an 8-year veteran of the department working primarily out of Station 23. He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in May 2023, WOIO reports.
