Elyria firefighters, police rescue child after 15-foot fall onto rocks near river
ELYRIA, Ohio — A young child was seriously injured Thursday after falling about 15 onto rocks near the Black River at Cascade Park. A news release from the Elyria Fire Department says firefighters and police were called to the park at about 3 p.m. The girl, whose age was not released, was in a “precarious spot” between large rocks and the river near the West Falls under the Lake Avenue Bridge, the release says.

This month, Cleveland became the first U.S. city to host the Pan-American Masters Games, an action-packed, albeit somewhat unconventional, international sporting event designed more for camaraderie and fun competition than intense rivalries. The ten-day games, which ended July 21, were open to any athlete 30 and over who wanted to compete. And they came from all over -- from the Nigerian curling team seeking to introduce the sport back home, to Allan Wilfrid Martin, a 98-year-old runner from New Zealand, the oldest competitor, who told cleveland.com’s Kaylee Remington that he took up the sport after retirement as a way to stay fit. Martin credits his longevity to “a good rum and coke,” but adds, “I don’t recommend it for everyone.”

Man hospitalized after Merriman Valley shooting early Friday
A 35-year-old man was hospitalized Friday morning after being found with a gunshot wound in Merriman Valley, according to Akron police. Officers responded to reports of a shooting at about midnight in the 1800 block of Merriman Road. Upon arrival, police found the man with gunshot wound to the chest. He was subsequently transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he is currently listed in critical condition. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
