I recently read Dan Alexander's piece entitled "Separation not Cancellation". There have been many previous court rulings in regards to legal interpretation of the "Separation of Church and State". Some rulings favored preserving "American Heritage" and have stated that despite the religious nature of displays, they were more historical in value and, therefore, did not violate the standard. Other rulings have swung in the other direction, citing that the overriding nature of the religious imagery and display was enough to cross the line and was therefore unacceptable.
