Flooding Hurts Water Quality in Lake Champlain
Billions of gallons of rainwater, runoff and debris spilled into Lake Champlain after the heavy rain and flooding earlier this month, turning the water into brown muck. The storm on July 10 and 11 also added large amounts of the nutrient phosphorous to the lake, which can help toxic cyanobacteria blooms grow, according to Matthew Vaughan, chief scientist for the Lake Champlain Basin Program. But, he added, this month’s storm does not appear to have been as devastating for the lake’s health as last summer’s flooding, which dumped six months’ worth of phosphorous into Vermont’s largest body of water.

Kimberly N. Graves
Kimberly Noel Graves, 42, passed away unexpectedly on June 29, 2024, in St. Albans, Vermont. Born on December 25, 1981, in Burlington, Vermont, she was a beloved daughter to Wanda Bushey and Rodney Graves. Kim graduated from Colchester High School. Kim found joy in music, especially the music composed and performed by her son, Jayden (GUTTA). She loved watching and encouraging Jayden to pursue his passion for music. Kim would do anything for the ones she loved. Her life was marked by her generosity and the deep bonds she formed with those around her, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Obituary: Timothy Bates, 1946-2024
Timothy Bates, 77, of Burlington, Vt., peacefully left us for distant shores on June 19, 2024. Although he fought successfully for decades against a dysfunctional immune system, by January fungus in his blood stream led to multiple complications throughout his body. Toward the end, his weak heart muscles challenged his ability to breathe.
