Six local golfers qualify for West Virginia Open
SHEPHERDSTOWN — Twenty-one golfers gathered at Cress Creek in an attempt to qualify for the West Virginia Open Thursday afternoon. Six earned a place in the prestigious tournament set to be held in Sissonville’s Edgewood Country Club from July 21 — August 2. Two athletes earned spots as alternates.
Alum Creek Lions car show/pig roast to return for 41st year
The Alum Creek Lions Club's 41st annual Car Show and Pig Roast will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Alum Creek Lions Park at 4452 Coal River Road, Alum Creek. Registration for entries will get underway at 8:30 a.m. Awards will be given to the top 50 entries, along with specialty trophies with dash plaques.
Spring Hill Cemetery offers weekly walking tours
Walking tours at Spring Hill Cemetery Park and Arboretum are taking place every Wednesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. through September. Multiple dog attacks reported to sheriff's department
IRONTON — It’s been a bad 10 days or so for animal bite complaints, most of them involving pit bulls, according to Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office reports. One of the complaints involved a 9-year-old boy who said he was riding his bike when he was attacked and bitten by a brown pit bull Saturday. A sheriff’s deputy responding to the call was bitten by the same dog in the Chesapeake area, according to the reports.

Condemned: Future uncertain for East Bank Middle School's Calvert Field
In a decision that has stirred strong emotions in the community, Kanawha County Schools has condemned Calvert Field at East Bank Middle School because of severe disrepair. The main bleachers and press box are structurally unsafe and cannot be used, school district officials said. This means that the school will not be able to host its three home football games this year. Instead, the games will be held 5 miles away, at Riverside High School.
