BALLARD, Linda Faye Russell, was the eleventh of eleven children, born into a poor but loving home on the outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama. A coal miner’s daughter, she endured a very crowded three-room house with no indoor plumbing and a trifling yard rooster that tormented her as a young girl, which is probably why she grew up to be as tough as she was. Beautiful, smart and athletic, Linda was a majorette and a prom queen in high school, but she could have easily played on the varsity baseball team if girls had been allowed back in the day. She married her high-school sweetheart, Bob, and worked for Auburn University to put him through grad school. With a sharp mind and a kind heart, Linda was well suited to become an educator and a church youth leader, working at times with kindergarteners, special needs children and the young people at Winchester’s First United Methodist Church. But some of her favorite memories were on the baseball diamond and the football gridiron, cheering for her own kids and the children of her good friends, even though they might be on opposing teams. Linda never missed a game, and she would gladly step in to pitch for batting practice. She had a wicked curveball. Linda traveled the world with her husband and two sons, visiting over 30 countries and even circumnavigating the globe once. Although she made many wonderful friends while living in Saudi Arabia, her favorite country was England, where she loved sipping beer shandies and schooling the locals in weekly pub trivia. Once, car sick from a lorry ride in London, she famously threw up on the steps of Buckingham Palace. And she always thought that was hilarious. She doted on her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She played a solid match of tennis and a brilliant game of bridge. She loved her family and friends fiercely. And she could build a campfire like no one’s business. About her own mother’s death, Linda always said that she would like to go the same way – peacefully in her sleep. And, true to form, that’s exactly what she did. Although Linda had many exciting adventures throughout her life, she loved those early years at Auburn like no other. She always thought of the university as her first real home, and it is to Auburn that she has requested to return. Even as ashes. War Eagle, Mom. War Eagle. Linda leaves behind her loving sons, Mike and Steve, and their spouses, both named Angela; seven grandchildren, Zack, John (Hayley), Sylas, Ben, Claire, Jasper and Caroline; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Jackson; her sister, Edna; along with countless cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Please join the family in service and celebration of Linda’s life on Sunday, July 7, 2024, from 2-4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Winchester, Tennessee. While Linda enjoyed flower arrangements, she wouldn’t have wanted everyone to make a fuss with that. But she did give generously to those programs that helped feed the hungry, especially children. So, if you feel inclined to honor Linda with something beautiful, please make it a donation to your local food bank or the Winchester First United Methodist School Backpack Program. Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, 300 1st Ave NW, Winchester, TN 37398, 931-967-2222, www.moorecortner.com.

Happy Roo!
I'm grateful to report that not only did I survive six hours of Bonnaroo, it wasn't nearly as painful as I thought it might be. I stopped at TJ Maxx Friday morning to pick up a small wallet to go inside my clear purse and some snacks for the ride to Manchester since I didn't know how bad the traffic might be. I picked my daughter up from her dad's house at noon and was pleasantly surprised that we arrived an hour and 21 minutes later at Coffee County High School to pick up our parking pass via a newly paved five-lane highway that ran alongside a large brick sign that said "Welcome to Manchester" and "Paid for by Bonnaroo."

Jon Oliver Foote
Jon Oliver Foote, age 63 of Decherd, went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 27, 2024. Jon was born March 17,1961, in Spirit Lake, Iowa, to Ron and June Foote. He was the youngest of nine siblings. Jon lived in Spirit Lake, Iowa, Polk, Nebraska, and Lincoln Nebraska, where he met Lori Watson. They became high school sweethearts and married on October 25, 1980. Jon and Lori moved to Colorado to pursue Aviation Maintenance training, graduated in 1984 from Colorado Aero Tech, and immediately started his own aircraft restoration business. They spent a total of fourteen years in Colorado, mostly in the Longmont/Frederick areas. In 1987, Jon had a vision to start an aviation ministry, Missionaire. The ministry trained people to become mechanics and pilots while actively restoring “real” flyable aircraft, most of which were sent into service with other ministries all over the world. Jon retired from his work with Missionaire in 2021, after almost thirty-five years of service. Jon also operated aircraft maintenance businesses in various locations where the family lived, including Kimball, Nebraska, Tompkinsville, Kentucky, and Winchester, Tennessee. Besides working on customers’ planes, he volunteered with notable projects such as the restoration of a flying 1916 Curtiss Jenny, and a DeHavilland DH-4. Throughout the Jenny Project, which took place in Kentucky, he actively involved high school students in the work. He and his son, Allan, launched a high school aviation program in the Tompkinsville school. He started again an internship for middle and high school students in Winchester, where they were restoring Curtiss Jenny. Jon loved mentoring young people spiritually and sharing his faith, encouraging them to grow into their own personal relationship with Christ. He served as a youth pastor in different churches over the years. His children grew up around airplanes. His two sons apprenticed with him and became aircraft mechanics as well as pilots. His daughter also learned the trade for a time and helped with recovering fabric aircraft. They were actively involved in the family and church ministry through the years. Jon was currently winding down operations at Winchester Airport in anticipation of retiring from aviation. He was looking forward to working on classic car projects and having more time to spend with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Jon loved to cook and was well-known for his special talent for creating delicious dishes for others. He had also recently taken on the hobby of creating unique epoxy tables. There was pretty much nothing Jon couldn’t do or figure out how to do. He worked hard with his hands not only on airplanes but restoring houses and other construction projects. Jon will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his loving wife, Lori of almost forty-four years, who remains in the Winchester area; son, Allan (Charity) Foote of Destrehan, Louisiana; son, Wesley (Leighanna) Foote of Peyton, Colorado; and daughter, Amanda (Jerry) Alexander of Scottsbluff, Nebraska. He is also survived by all eight of his siblings, and seven grandchildren (Ian, Kaelyn, Seth, Eli, Kyle, Elissa, and Amarissa). He leaves behind a host of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, from 12pm-2pm at Kings Cross Church. A memorial service will follow at 2pm. Church address is 222 Turkey Creek Road, Tullahoma, TN, 37388.
