More TN Students Qualify For Free School Meals
With the school year approaching quickly, this could help a lot of families out. More schools in Tennessee are now eligible to serve free meals to students after a change in the rules. The Community Eligibility Provision program is an optional program for schools to provide breakfast and lunch to students at no cost.
MSSA: The Beatles, Barbie, and What’s Happened to Tennessee
The Monteagle Sunday School Assembly in Monteagle continues its 142nd consecutive summer season of enrichment with an interdenominational worship service at 11 a.m. in the Assembly’s Warren Chapel. The season will continue through Sunday, Aug. 4, featuring numerous visiting lecturers who will present morning and evening programs that are open free of charge to the public; unless otherwise noted, morning lectures begin at 10:45 a.m. and evening lectures at 7:45 p.m. Anyone interested in a full schedule of the Monteagle Assembly’s 2024 program is welcome to pick one up at the Assembly Office (tel. (931) 924-2286), or to peruse the schedule on the Assembly’s website at .
Norma S. Moore
Norma S. Moore, age 94, of Manchester went to be with her Heavenly Father Wednesday, July 3, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 17, 1930, in Pilot Oak, Kentucky to the late Vernon and Ila (Dallas) Cavender. In addition to her parents, Norma is also preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Will Edd Moore; and siblings, Virgil Cavender, Marie Allison, Nelle Madrey, Clifton Cavender, Lucille Flood, and Lil Guy Cavender.
New fire station
An additional fire station in Coalmont aims to accommodate growth. “We have been working on this for a year or so,” said Coalmont Mayor Tom Meeks. “The new station will be located where Danny Stewart’s business once stood. The junction is building up and a lot of businesses seem to be locating there, so we want to give them better coverage. Plus, we’ve got the school in that area."

Kirk H. and Marchie K. Bubul, of Kimball, departed this life on Monday, July 8, as they had spent the last fifty plus years, they were together. It was their favorite way to be. Their joy in one another, laughter and sincerity will be missed by all of their family, friends and neighbors.

Finalists announced for national Songbook Academy
From hundreds of applicants nationwide, 40 high school students from 14 states have been selected to participate in this year’s Songbook Academy®, a weeklong summer intensive that immerses young performers in America’s musical heritage and helps them develop as artists under the guidance of Broadway stars and other entertainment professionals and music educators.
William “Billy” Thomas
Mr. William “Billy” Thomas, age 66, of Manchester, TN, passed from this life on Saturday, July 6, 2024, in Winchester, TN. Billy was born in Shelby County, TN, to his late parents, Jack Thomas and Juanita Stanley Thomas. He was affiliated with the bail bonding business and owned and operated City Bonding in Manchester for 25 plus years. He was of the Baptist faith. In his free time, Billy enjoyed spending time on Tims Ford Lake with family and friends, golfing, traveling, Nashville Predators Hockey, and University of TN football. He loved supporting local school athletics by attending many softball, baseball, football, and basketball games. Billy also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Tullahoma Youth Tennis Camp
The Tullahoma High School tennis teams will be holding a youth camp starting on July 22, going through July 25. They will be holding two camps; the “Lil Ballers Tennis Camp” for boys and girls in first through fourth grade and the “Future Wildcat Camp” for boys and girls from fifth to eight grade. The first camp will be from 1–2:30 p.m. and the second from 2:30–4 p.m. If the camp is affected by rain, July 26 is saved as a rain day to make it up.

Wade receives scholarship award
The University of Tennessee at Martin held its annual Honors Day Ceremony on April 14 to recognize students who excel as scholars and leaders. Samantha Wade, of Tullahoma, received the Ernest and Wilma Newby Scholarship Award. This award is given to two students majoring in history, criminal justice or political science who have, if possible, some military connection. Recipients are selected by the History faculty.
Barbara Field Hinkle
Barbara Field Hinkle passed away at the age of 100, on June 27, 2024 at Autumn Oaks Assisted Living in Manchester, TN where she had lived for the past year. Barbara was born on March 21, 1924 in White Plains, NY to William Clifford and Mildred Field. She grew up in Mahopac Falls, NY. After high school and secretarial school, she worked as a secretary for several years. In 1944, Barbara entered service in the U.S. Navy WAVES. In December 1945, she was honorably discharged from the navy and married Clinton Purdy. Three daughters were born to this marriage: Beverly, Kathy, and Lynne. In 1961, Barbara and her daughters moved to Black Mountain, NC to be near her parents who had moved there several years earlier. In 1969, she married William H. Hinkle. Added to the family was Bill’s daughter Phoebe Chloe. In 1992, Barbara and Bill moved to Cullowhee, NC. She continued to live there after Bill’s death in 2009 until 2015 when she moved to Tennessee to be closer to her daughter Lynne.
Decherd Alderman and Wife Arrested Facing Drug Charges and Possible Murder Charges
At the request of 12th Judicial District Attorney General Courtney Lynch. The 12th Judicial Drug Task Force began investigating the overdose deaths of William Horton and Miles Kincaid, which occurred in Franklin County on April 21, 2022. The current DTF investigation began after investigators with the Decherd Police Department uncovered new evidence in the case. Based on the investigation, DTF agents have charged Justin and Paige Stubblefield with one count of conspiracy to distribute oxycodone, a Schedule II controlled substance. Justin Stubblefield, who is an Alderman for the City of Decherd, was also charged with one count of money laundering based on the financial transactions that occurred during the distribution of the oxycodone.
UTSI Program Gives Military Members Work Experience
The inspiration for the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) becoming an approved Department of Defense SkillBridge partner came from within. One of UTSI’s staff members was the parent of an Air Force service member who was looking for a program to help his transition out of the military. He asked if there was an opportunity at UTSI. Although there wasn’t at the time, it sparked a dialogue about UTSI applying to become an authorized organization.
Pruitt named new Red Raider baseball coach
Coffee County Central High School has announced that Jerry Pruitt will be the new head baseball coach. Pruitt has been an Assistant Coach at Coffee Middle School the past 3 years and comes to the high school with a “vast amount of baseball knowledge,” according to the CHS athletic department.
Police release name of Sunday drowning victim
Coffee County Sheriff’s Department authorities have released the name of the drowning victim recovered from Normandy Lake. The deceased has been identified as Hunter Smithson, age 28, of Manchester. Mr. Smithson was a 2014 graduate of Coffee County Central High School, where he played football and baseball. According to...
