Thunderstorms, loud noises and trucks beeping in reverse send my 66-pound heart throb shivering in panic. With July 4 but days away, I reached out to the St. Johns County Pet Center requesting advice and permission to share their information for "Firework Safety Tips."

    1. Keep pets indoors during firework displays to reduce their exposure to loud noises and flashing lights. Create a safe and comfortable indoor space filled with toys, blankets and treats for a pet to retreat to when frightened.
    2. Distract pets with calming activities and keep them occupied with interactive toys. Play soft music. Use calming aids such as pheromone diffusers, calming collars, or supplements recommended by your veterinarian to help reduce anxiety in pets.
    3. Pet collars should contain up-to-date identification tags and/or microchips with correct contact information in case they wander away. Never leave a pet alone in a car during a fireworks display, as they can become afraid, distressed and overheated.
    4. Pets can sense human emotions, so remaining calm and reassuring during the firework display helps them feel secure. If your pet has severe anxiety or a fear of fireworks, consult with your veterinarian for additional advice and possible medication options.

Hey, along with sharing your favorite St. Augustine moments with us, if you've adopted a pet from the St. Johns Pet Adoption Center, let us know. Send pictures and your story along with celebrating family, friends, and solo days brimming with funny, historical or simply pleasant moments with a photo as well as the "Hey, I have an idea; and did you know; and why is this happening in St. Augustine?" and of course, Tuesday's, "I've got a question" notes to Lviti@gannett.com .
