Fallen firefighter receives a final farewell with full honors
Firefighters, family and others bid farewell to Matthew Tobben on Saturday morning in Union, where he grew up and spent most of his career. Tobben, 42, assistant chief with the Boone County Fire Protection District, died early Monday rescuing two people from floodwaters in north Columbia. He was in an inflatable boat with another firefighter and the two distressed individuals when the boat capsized.

Amid ‘healthy’ area housing market, a starter home dearth
2023 was a big year for Dylan and Abi Brocato. Abi graduated college, the couple got married, and in between those milestones, they bought their first house in Washington. The pair live happily in a subdivision off Bieker Road, a new build by Northern Star completed in 2023. A new home was not their goal when they started out, however. They began their search last year for an existing starter home — something affordable, in the range of 1,500 square feet or below, with enough space to begin building their family.
Boone County firefighter laid to rest in Union

Flanked by hundreds of police and fire vehicles, the casket of Boone County firefighter Matt Tobben proceeded on Saturday morning along Route 50 to East Central College for an emotional remembrance ceremony and Mass.

A "Pirate Academy" was held Friday at the Union branch of Scenic Regional Library in which kids were instructed on mock swordfighting using styrofoam "pool noodles." Teaching the class were representatives of Swords and Roses, a party company out of St. Louis that specializes in pirate themes. about a dozen kids came out to learn how to defend and attack like a pirate.
Robertsville woman arrested for fentanyl, meth
A Robertsville woman is facing multiple charges following a drug raid at her home Thursday. Detectives with the Franklin County Narcotics Enforcement Unit executed a search warrant at a residence in the 800 block of Cheshire Lane in Robertsville at approximately 7:15 a.m. July 11. They seized “several grams of crystal methamphetamine, electronic scales, and several pieces of miscellaneous drug paraphernalia,” according to a release from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Peggy Joyce Sparks, 74, of De Soto died July 15, 2024, in Crystal City. Ms. Sparks was a homemaker. She enjoyed knitting and loved nothing more than attending family gatherings. She also was a member of the Boilermakers. Born Oct. 13, 1949, in De Soto, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Sparks and Vera (Pickett) Sparks.

Four people safe following river rescue
Four people were safely rescued from the Missouri River near Washington after their boat capsized Thursday night, according to Fire Chief Tim Frankenberg. Damage, backups to Pacific sewers after storms
Heavy rains in recent weeks are causing sewer woes in Pacific. A 90-inch stormwater culvert collapsed on Integram Drive Tuesday as a result of the deluge, opening up a huge hole in the ground with a circumference of about 20 feet. Separately, a number of Pacific residents voiced complaints about wastewater backups into their homes.
