Damage, backups to Pacific sewers after storms
Heavy rains in recent weeks are causing sewer woes in Pacific. A 90-inch stormwater culvert collapsed on Integram Drive Tuesday as a result of the deluge, opening up a huge hole in the ground with a circumference of about 20 feet. Separately, a number of Pacific residents voiced complaints about wastewater backups into their homes.

A "Pirate Academy" was held Friday at the Union branch of Scenic Regional Library in which kids were instructed on mock swordfighting using styrofoam "pool noodles." Teaching the class were representatives of Swords and Roses, a party company out of St. Louis that specializes in pirate themes. about a dozen kids came out to learn how to defend and attack like a pirate.

New prep academy opens in Washington
After years of working in the education field, New Haven resident Erin Gaebe has opened her own facility that focuses on early childhood development and education. On Monday, Gaebe and staff members welcomed 15 children into The Sage Bee Prep Academy, located at 1901 Heritage Hills Drive in Washington, which is a school that prepares children ages 2 to 6 for kindergarten.

Warren R. Baisch, 95, of De Soto died July 12, 2024, at Country Meadows in Park Hills. Mr. Baisch and his wife, Mary, owned and operated Baisch Nursing Home until their retirement. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in De Soto. Born Aug. 3, 1928, in De Soto, he was the son of the late Rudolph and Alice (Ledinger) Baisch.

Dorothy J. “Dottie” Kite, 93, De Soto died July 10, 2024, at StoneBridge Senior Living in De Soto. Mrs. Kite worked as a bookkeeper and was a member of First Baptist Church in De Soto. Born Jan. 25, 1931, in De Soto, she was the daughter of the late Lucille (Uland) Livengood and Lawerence Isbel. She was the stepdaughter of the late Woodrow Livengood.
Memorial service held for fallen former Union firefighter
Firefighters and emergency personnel from across Missouri attended the memorial service for Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Matt Tobben on Saturday at East Central College. Tobben died while responding to a swift water rescue in Columbia on July 8. Tobben had served with the Union Fire Department for 19 years before taking a job with Boone County two months ago. On July 9, a procession of emergency vehicles delivered Tobben's body to his hometown of Union. The Saturday service was coordinated by the Boone County and Union Fire Protection Districts along with the Missouri Fire Service Funeral Assistance Team. Friend of Tobben and Union Fire Captain Joe Straatmann spoke during the memorial service about the memories he had with Tobben and the type of person he was. "He was a man like no other man. His heart and drive was simple. It was to provide for his family and to help others," said Straatmann.
