Amtrak train derails near Washington, Mo.
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A train going from Kansas City to Chicago derailed just east of Washington, Mo. Monday afternoon. The derailment happened just before 5:00 p.m. near Old Highway 100 and Ming Drive, which is close to the Missouri River. A tree being down on the tracks led to the derailment, Amtrak says. Power was out on the train for a time but has been restored.
MoDOT requests public input for I-44 Corridor Study
(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.) The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is requesting the public's input in an environmental study of Interstate 44 this summer. According to a media release from MoDOT, the environmental study, called "Forward 44" specifically targets over 250 miles of I-44 from the Oklahoma state line to the Route 100 East interchange near Gray Summit in Franklin County.

Conner, who will be a sophomore at Hillsboro this school year, won the national title in the bulls-eye competition with a score of 297 (out of a perfect 300) at the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) championships June 6-8 in Daytona Beach, Fla. In the 3-D Challenge, Conner shot 293 to finish fifth. At the Eastern NASP tournament May 9-11 in Louisville, he scored 292 in bull’s-eye (33rd out of 2,513 participants) and 288 in 3-D (third out of 295).
Multiple Crashes Reported During Soggy Tuesday
The remnants of Hurricane Beryl drenched the area on July 9, creating hazardous road conditions, causing multiple wrecks and tying up local traffic. Helen Louise Murray, 98, Hillsboro, formerly of Jackson and Cape Girardeau
Helen Louise Murray, 98, of Hillsboro, formerly of Jackson and Cape Girardeau, died July 4, 2024, at her home. Mrs. Murray was a member of the Iona Baptist Church in Oriole. In 2010, she transferred her membership to the First Baptist Church of De Soto. She worked at the former International Shoe Co. in Cape Girardeau. She worked and retired from Cape Girardeau school district in the cafeteria where she managed and planned all school lunches. Born Jan. 16, 1926, in Cape Girardeau, she was the daughter of the late Oral and Jessie Oguin Cummings.
Amtrak train derails in Missouri after striking a tree
KANSAS CITY—An Amtrak train struck a tree Monday afternoon near Washington, Missouri. According to a statement from the rail service, "Just before 5p.m. Monday, Amtrak Train 319 made contact with a tree on the tracks east of Washington, Missouri. There were no injuries to the 124 passengers and five crew members aboard the train made up of one locomotive and seven railcars, but rear axle of the locomotive lost contact with the tracks."
Stephen Edward Winters, 74, High Ridge
Stephen Edward Winters, 74, of High Ridge died June 30, 2024, in St. Louis. Mr. Winters served in the U.S. Army. He retired at the rank of captain as a firefighter/paramedic for the Ladue Fire Department after 38 years. He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters Local 2665. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, antiquing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren and family. Born Aug. 17, 1949, in Kennett, he was the son of the late Clara Roberta (Edwards) and John W. Winters.
No injuries after Amtrak train derails near Washington, Missouri
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. — No one was injured when an Amtrak train carrying more than 100 passengers derailed Monday evening just east of Washington, Missouri. The Lincoln Service Missouri River Runner derailed near the area of Ming Drive, north of Highway 100, along a stretch of tracks that run along the Missouri River. The scene was about six miles east of the Washington Station, an Amtrak station that sits in the downtown Washington historic district.

Kathleen Ann (Downey) Klein, 81, of Ellisville died July 3, 2024. Ms. Klein was very proud of her Irish heritage. She claimed traveling to Ireland and kissing the Blarney Stone on her birthday was one of her happiest moments. She enjoyed spending time with family. She will be remembered for her smile, sense of humor and ability to find beauty in all things. Born June 18, 1943, in Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of Harvey and Rosemary (Clancy) Downey.

Yvonne Marie “Tootsie” (Boyer) Sullivan, 87, of De Soto died July 2, 2024. Mrs. Sullivan enjoyed music, dancing, gardening, reading, solving jigsaw puzzles, walking in her neighborhood, coloring pictures and spending time with family and friends. She will be remembered for her sharp wit, gregarious spirit and generous heart. Born May 28, 1937, in Old Mines, she was the daughter of the late James R. and Barbara M. (Bequette) Boyer.
