Nike Elementary driveway nears completion
Despite running into some unexpected roadblocks, construction of the new Nike Elementary School driveway will be completed before school starts. At the Meramec Valley R-III School District board meeting Monday, Assistant Superintendent of Personnel and Student Services Tom Sauvage said the construction company had hit a water main, fiber optic cable and old oil tank while excavating for the project. He said the district was unaware those items were there.

VFW Post 2661 earns All-American designation
Washington’s VFW Post 2661 has earned national recognition as an All-American Post for the first time in its 86-year history. Post Commander Jason Stanfield said the honor will be officially awarded later this month at the VFW National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Stanfield said earning this level of recognition “takes an army” and highlighted the dedication of all the post’s officers and members, as well as the support from around Washington.
St. Charles Post 312 drops out of SuperZone in second round
Pacific Post 320’s seniors advanced in the Super Zone 1 Tournament without opposition Thursday. Post 320, which fell 3-2 to Moberly Post 6 Wednesday in the opening round, picked up a victory in the second round over St. Charles Post 312 via forfeit.

Local Business Celebrates Green Pines Student’s Writing
A recent visit to a local business turned into a celebration of Green Pines Elementary student Stella and her writing. Stella, a rising Green Pines fifth-grader, and her mother, Mary Ann Vlasich, a third-grade teacher at the school, made one of their semi-regular trips to Painted Tree Boutiques in Ballwin in early July. They brought one of Stella’s assignments from the previous school year – a persuasive essay assigned by teacher Hayley Gerbec – to give to the staff.

Anheuser-Busch and Hedinger Beverage Donate Emergency Drinking Water to Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department
Anheuser-Busch and Hedinger Beverage have teamed up with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) to deliver emergency drinking water to the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department in Washington. This donation is part of an initiative by the brewer to provide 1.5 million cans of water to volunteer fire departments nationwide. The goal is to equip local volunteer firefighters with resources ahead of the summer wildfire season. Across the United States, 65 percent of firefighters are volunteers, often operating with limited budgets for essential supplies. The 1.5 million cans of emergency drinking water will be distributed to over 630 volunteer fire departments across 44 states, produced and canned by Anheuser-Busch breweries.
Pressure builds at St. Clair City Hall
St. Clair officials say the clock is ticking to fill two key positions in the city government and avoid the risk of paralyzing city operations and hampering projects. At Monday’s Board of Aldermen meeting, City Administrator John Lippert said it has been two weeks since the city received any applications for city clerk, a position which has been vacant since the May departure of Dana Collins-Messex. In a little under a month, Lippert is also slated to resign from his own position.

Union Auditorium open following renovations
The Union Memorial Auditorium is open for business, and the city’s Park Advisory Board members got to check out recent improvements after their Thursday meeting. The auditorium was closed for more than $700,000 in renovations from October 2023 until June 1, when rain caused it to reopen sooner than expected for cornhole play at the annual Founders Day celebration.
