Abby Dunstan’s final swing of the 2024 softball season resulted in a home run. It came in the second inning of the PIAA Class 4A semifinals against Blue Mountain on June 10. The Eagles never pitched to her again. They walked her intentionally the next two times up and the strategy paid off in a 5-3 win that sent the Schuylkill League team to the state finals, and ultimately, the PIAA title.

Caron Treatment Centers announces new residential program for teens
Caron Treatment Centers has debuted a new residential treatment program for teens struggling with a substance use or co-occurring disorder. Designed for teens ages 16 and 17, Caron’s teen program treats substance use disorder and co-occurring conditions and behaviors, such as anger, interpersonal conflict and peer relationship challenges, family conflict, self-esteem, self-injurious behaviors and mood disorders, the nonprofit said in a press release.

Grier City Union Sunday School yard sale
The Grier City Union Sunday School will have a yard sale Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days from the church at 202 Grier Ave., in Grier City, Rush Township. Sunday School member Linda Light, is shown among the clothing, household items, books, toys and more. Volunteers will also be selling haluski, sloppy joes, turkey barbecue, hot dogs and baked goods. All proceeds will help maintain the historic Sunday school and support programming. Sunday school is held at 9:45 a.m. on Sundays. All are welcome. The facility will also participate in the Grier City Community Yard Sale, which will be held Aug. 3 and 4, however, the Sunday school will have its sale on Aug. 2 and 3. JILL WHALEN/TIMES NEWS.
2023 Citizen of the Year
Paul H. Dimon of Tower City received the Tower Porter Improvement Organization's 2023 Citizen of the Year honor during a ceremony Saturday. The organization honored Dimon for his many years of dedication to the community where he volunteers with many organizations. A lifelong resident of Tower City, Dimon owns and operates the Dimon Funeral Home & Cremation Services. He is married to the former Anne Marie Flynn, who assists him with the daily operation. They are the proud parents of two sons, Jared and Spencer. Jared is a graduate of Penn State University and Pittsburg Institute of Mortuary Science. He will complete his internship at Dimon Funeral Home in February and will join the family business as a second-generation funeral director. Spencer is a graduate of Shippensburg University and recently finished his first year at Thomas Jefferson Medical School where he is studying to become a doctor. West Penn Lions present scholarships
The West Penn Lions Club recently presented two scholarships to local students. On July 3, Marian Catholic Senior Makenzie Moyer was awarded the scholarship at a West Penn Lions Club meeting. She was born 62 years ago to Edna Mae Mast and James Allen Good, and spent most of her life near Fleetwood, PA. In recent years she enjoyed living near friends and family in Lancaster, PA. MOUNT CARMEL — Lorraine H. Horsfield, 88, of 305-311 S. Chestnut St., Mount Carmel, passed away Monday, July 15, 2024, at her residence. She was born in Atlas on Nov. 18, 1935, the daughter of the late Albert and Helen (Klueznik) Colross. She was a lifelong resident of both Atlas and Mount Carmel.
