Strausstown man sentenced to decade in prison in child pornography case
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - A Berks County man will spend a decade behind bars after pleading guilty in a child pornography case. Authorities say 39-year-old Michael Coleman of Strausstown was sentenced Wednesday in United States District Court to 10 years’ imprisonment, 10 years of supervised release and was ordered to pay $35,000 in restitution.

A house in Jim Thorpe that sold for $743,400 tops the list of the most expensive residential real estate sales in Carbon County in the past week. In total, 37 residential real estate sales were recorded in the county during the past week, with an average price of $282,697. The average price per square foot ended up at $175.

Pennsylvania Ford Dealer Sues CDK Over Cyberattack Fallout
Last month, CDK Global was impacted by a cyberattack/ransomware attack stemming from a group of European hackers, which had tremendous ripple effects on more than one Ford dealer – along with the 15,000 total dealerships that company serves in the U.S. For several weeks, certain dealers were unable to complete the sales process, leaving them scrambling to figure out how to continue to do business while they waited on a resolution. That finally happened earlier this month when CDK systems came back online, but the damage was already done.
Danville State Hospital Leaders Receive ‘Sustainability’ Award
DANVILLE – Danville State Hospital has received a new award, an environmental sustainability award from the head of the state’s Human Service Department. Dr. Val Arkoosh, the State Secretary of the Department of Human Services said the hospital leadership has reduced their carbon footprint. She said, “That’s why we are here today. To honor the team at Danville State Hospital, for the tangible and visible work each and every one of you is doing to promote environmental sustainability and to make our world a greener and healthier place.”

Briggs Farm Blues Fest – Nescopeck, PA
My first foray into the long-standing Briggs Farm Fest proved to be at once exciting and comfortable. Held on a lovely working farm, many of the attendees camped in the mowed fields or surrounding woods, and even sissy, motel-addicted fans (like me) got into the laid-back blues groove the minute we walked through the gate.
Crossing repairs close Grier Ave; will close Route 54
RYAN TOWNSHIP – If you’re heading to Delano via Barnesville, you’ll have to find a different route this week. The Reading and Northern Railroad is working on the railroad crossing just north of the Barnesville Post Office and traffic is being detoured via Route 54 and Interstate 81.
Towing ordinance concerns raised again at borough council
SHENANDOAH – It’s been awhile since Talk of Town, LLC has received a towing call from Shenandoah Borough. A long while. That’s what Ruth and Dwight Williams told borough council at Monday’s meeting, echoing concerns they have been raising for several years now which led to the passing of a new towing ordinance.
Lebanon Area Fair Welcomes Junior Board
Picture this: it’s three weeks before opening day of the 68th Lebanon Area Fair and an important meeting is in progress at the Lebanon County Ag Center. Eleven youths are seated around tables facing each other. Many of them have laptops open in front of them. Cellphones are whipped out when a fair volunteer’s phone number is needed.
Sign renaming part of Route 143, honoring 2 local fallen firefighters, to be unveiled Thursday
HARRISBURG, Pa. – A Pennsylvania state senator will unveil a new sign renaming part of Route 143 in Lehigh County in honor of two local fallen firefighters. State Sen. Jarrett Coleman (R-16), on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., will unveil a new sign renaming Route 143 in Lehigh County as Heroes Highway in honor of Marvin Gruber and Zachary Paris, according to a news release from the Senate Republican Communications Office.
First responders plan Night Out events in area communities
SHENANDOAH – Next month, first responders in three area communities will hold events to help connect the community with those who serve. In Shenandoah, the Shenandoah Community Ambulance Association, Shenandoah Fire Department, and Shenandoah Police Department are joining forces to hold their annual National Night Out event on August 6 from 5pm to 8pm.
Riverside Police Talk of Repairing Busted Traffic Signal
RIVERSIDE – One Northumberland County community has a bum traffic signal and it’s confusing drivers. In Riverside, police tell us their traffic signal is letting left turn traffic have a green light at the wrong times. They did not talk of any major hazard or any accidents, and they say they are working with PennDOT.
Transfer Day at Scranton and Hazleton Campuses – July 31
Johnson College is holding a Transfer Day on Thursday, July 31, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its Scranton and Hazleton campuses. The College is encouraging current college students who are interested in changing the direction of their education and ultimately their career path to visit its campus.
Grier City Union Sunday School yard sale
The Grier City Union Sunday School will have a yard sale Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days from the church at 202 Grier Ave., in Grier City, Rush Township. Sunday School member Linda Light, is shown among the clothing, household items, books, toys and more. Volunteers will also be selling haluski, sloppy joes, turkey barbecue, hot dogs and baked goods. All proceeds will help maintain the historic Sunday school and support programming. Sunday school is held at 9:45 a.m. on Sundays. All are welcome. The facility will also participate in the Grier City Community Yard Sale, which will be held Aug. 3 and 4, however, the Sunday school will have its sale on Aug. 2 and 3. JILL WHALEN/TIMES NEWS.

Caron Treatment Centers has debuted a new residential treatment program for teens struggling with a substance use or co-occurring disorder. Designed for teens ages 16 and 17, Caron’s teen program treats substance use disorder and co-occurring conditions and behaviors, such as anger, interpersonal conflict and peer relationship challenges, family conflict, self-esteem, self-injurious behaviors and mood disorders, the nonprofit said in a press release.

One killed in three-vehicle I-80 crash
DANVILLE — One driver is dead and two others sustained minor injuries in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in Montour County on Wednesday afternoon. The 2:27 p.m. crash occurred at mile marker 221, in Liberty Township, just west of Danville, state police at Milton said.
