Preparations are underway for West Hazleton Trinity Lutheran Church’s second annual Community Day street event, which will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at North Fifth Street and Jackson Avenue. A possible solution to code issues in Shamokin
To the editor: Mr. Zyla, that was excellent coverage in The Weekender, giving the public such an in-depth insight into the issues the Code Enforcement office handles in Shamokin. They have a great leader in Councilman Barry Kehler. The article got me thinking, and I believe I have the solution to one of the biggest issues in the city for well over a decade, getting more help in the code office. We could have used ARPA funds, but hundreds of thousands were given out by the last administration as bonuses weeks before leaving office.

Coaldale woman charged with animal cruelty
A Coaldale woman was charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and neglect related to the May rescue of 17 dogs and other animals from her property in May. Coaldale police charged Bethany Bachert, 70, of Bull Run Street, Friday on six counts of felony aggravated cruelty to animals; 18 counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals; 17 counts of misdemeanor neglect of animals for failing to provide food and water; and 11 counts of misdemeanor neglect of animals for failing to provide necessary veterinary care.

Driver killed in I-80 crash identified
DANVILLE — The driver killed in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Danville on Wednesday was Rocco Volpe Jr., 60, from Hudson, Massachusetts, Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn reported.
