Sound Off
What is the status of the former Conyngham Township supervisor trial? The former supervisor was arrested in 2019, indicted May 28, 2022 and on Feb. 7, 2024, the judge further delayed the process by granting a 90-day continuance. This should put the trial somewhere around the beginning of May 2024 and here we are fast approaching the end of July with nothing but crickets to be heard. Thank you judicial system for ignoring the best interests of the public to a speedy trial and the attempt to justify the order by telling us the ends of justice is served. Wow! What about justice for the Conyngham Township residents? In 2020 we did have a delay for COVID that probably created a backlog of cases. Then why didn’t the judge factor in the COVID delay when granting the continuance? Enough is enough already, this matter needs to be resolved! Whether guilty or innocent, the Conyngham Township residents deserve justice and possible restitution.

Starwatch: Lunar landing memories run abound on 55th anniversary of Apollo 11
We have a full moon over Shamokin this weekend, which only seems appropriate since this is the 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission, the first time people landed on the moon. It’s so hard to believe it was that long ago. I was 13 years old, but it seems like it was yesterday. It was the culmination and fulfillment of the challenge made by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 after Alan Shepard completed the first American manned mission into space. JFK challenged NASA to send Americans to land on the moon and safely return by 1970. This was a highly ambitious goal, considering the U.S. space program hadn’t even put a man in orbit around the Earth when he pitched his challenge. John Glenn wouldn’t do that for almost another year.

Letter to the editor: Distance ourselves from ‘politics as usual’ fraternity
I just got a request in the mail for a donation to Donald Trump’s campaign, and I sent one. The regular, career, politicians are a fraternity that feeds on the hard work of the taxpayer. They talk, and talk, for years (decades) about taxpayer concerns, such as alternative methods for funding our schools, yet nothing changes because career politicians answer to their special interest supporters, not us, the taxpayer/voter.
