Conrad Weiser golfer wins Berks Junior Amateur by one shot
A year after finishing second in the tournament, Conrad Weiser’s Alex Golembiewski found redemption Wednesday at the 2024 Berks County Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship. Golembiewski, a rising junior, shot an 11-over 81 to defeat Cameron Peffel, an All-Berks sophomore from Fleetwood, by one stroke at Blackwood Golf Course.
Concrete beam on its way to new home
An immense concrete bridge beam took up both lanes of Route 61 south in Schuylkill Haven on Thursday morning on its way to Bucks County. Manufactured at Northeast Prestressed Products in Cressona, the 105-foot beam weighing 71 tons was one of four destined for a highway improvement project on Route 1 at the Neshaminy and Penndel interchanges. Evan Fink, Northeast’s sales manager, said the largest of the beams measured 150 feet long and weighed 103 tons.

Lansford man charged after standoff
A Lansford man who evaded officers last month was nabbed after a 30-minute standoff on a second-story roof on East Abbott Street on Wednesday morning. Matthew D. Ferguson, 42, was arraigned by District Judge William J. Kissner on charges of flight to avoid apprehension and evading arrest, and jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Mr. and Mrs. Gary Marsch celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 11. The couple was married in the former St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, West Hazleton, in 1974. To acknowledge this event, they cruised to Alaska in May, and completed a Land Tour which included the cities of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. The couple has three sons, Eric, Blandon; and Jeff and Jon, California.
City meter collections totaled more than $73,000 in 2023
SHAMOKIN — Meter collections remain a valuable source of revenue for the City of Shamokin. Last year, meter collections totaled $73,235.04, which is a significant sum but approximately $13,000 less than money collected in 2019.

Shamokin, other area police seeking co-responders to assist in mental health cases
SHAMOKIN — The city police department is working with a crisis intervention provider to find funding for a co-responder who would assist officers in mental health cases. Shamokin Police Chief Raymond Siko II told city council members at Monday's council meeting that the provider is working with the Sunbury and Mount Carmel police departments to try to get a co-responder in those communities, as well. The extra help would free officers to respond to other calls. The co-responder also would follow up with those in crisis and make sure they get the help they need.
