Big plans afoot for the Castagnasso Horse Farm
The continued presence of a horse farm just half-a-block from Sonoma Plaza at 196 East Spain Street is a near miracle. A longtime home to Clydesdales owned by the Castagnasso family, the property was sold to new owners in 2021 when the Castagnasso family relocated to the East Coast. The property is zoned Medium Density Residential, but the new owners have no plan for additional housing and plan to continue to operate a horse farm to provide boarding for retired and rescue horses.
Local Obon unites more than just ancestors
An entrancing set of vocals, heard alongside other voices, drew locals towards the Enmanji Buddhist Temple in Sebastopol on Saturday evening. Gathered in the center of the temple’s courtyard, community members danced beside one another to commemorate and show respect for their ancestors. An Obon is a long-practiced summer tradition, where song and dance are used to connect with an individual’s roots and honor their ancestors, but while it’s a multi-generational tradition for many, dancers from all backgrounds, ages and ethnicities were welcome. A diverse range of individuals showed their confidence as they danced in both Kimonos and street clothes in unison and with grace.

Sewer Rates in Rohnert Park to be Raised Seven-Percent
Rohnert Park is raising its sewer rates by about seven percent. The rate increase, approved by the Rohnert Park City Council this week, will take effect in October. Monthly bills for single-family homes are expected to increase from $42.20 to $45.33. There will be incremental rate hikes during each of the next three years. The city says it needs to keep up with the rising cost of managing and treating its wastewater. Rohnert Park currently has the least expensive sewer rates in Sonoma County. Cotati will take that title in October.
K9 Champ discovers 70 pounds of meth during Napa traffic stop
NAPA, California — A California Highway Patrol K9 unit discovered 70 pounds of methamphetamine during a recent traffic stop on State Route 29. The incident occurred when CHP K9 Champ and his handler stopped a vehicle for following too closely. Champ quickly detected the odor of a controlled substance, leading to the discovery of methamphetamine worth approximately $250,000, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol. Sonoma Developer Ken Mattson Faces Defaults and Auctions of Several Properties
Sonoma Developer Ken Mattson is facing more defaults and possible auctions of his properties. The Press Democrat reports that KS Mattson Properties has received at least 13 default notices since June 28, representing up to 19 different addresses in and around the city of Sonoma. In addition, nearly a dozen of Mattson’s properties are scheduled to go up for public auction in August if mortgage payments aren’t brought up to date or an agreement reached with lenders. The properties involved are mostly residential homes but also include the Cottage Inn & Spa, an Inn to Remember, office buildings, apartments or condominiums, a warehouse and a small shopping center.
