Bill Pramuk, Trees and People in Napa Valley: In praise of the cherry
Lately I have been stopping by the fruit stand on Silverado Trail to pick up fresh strawberries. A sweet bonus has been fresh cherries, one of my favorite things. There are certain things in life that have a special appeal, just for being what they are, their unique qualities, their natural beauty. Think of Maria’s list in the Sound of Music — “Raindrops on roses...”. My list includes the cherry. Everything about it from the sight of two cherries on their stems, the crisp bite of the fruit, the burst of the sweet juicy flesh and, given the right location, spitting out the pits. Further, relating to food, cherry wood is great for grilling, adding a sweet fruity flavor to meats and vegetables.

Expressions of Hope is growing, which means that there's even more 'hope' to go around. The Napa nonprofit, which provides free clothing and other aid for foster and kinship care families, has moved to a new, much bigger location. After years of sharing space with the Napa Valley Life Church,...
Letters to the Sonoma Index-Tribune for July 26
By choosing not to run, there is honor for Biden’s valor. His forsaking narcissism for responsiveness to the “Battle for the Soul of the Nation” will be historic. Perhaps the angst in his final decision was not dissimilar to that of Shakespeare’s Brutus to wit:. “Between...
Smokey Bear’s 80th, fire safety tips at Pena Adobe Park
He’s perhaps better known than Yogi Bear, McGruff the Crime Dog, and Woodsy Owl, but maybe equally known as Uncle Sam, the top-hatted, gray-haired, stern-looking man pointing his finger in a military recruitment poster. Smokey Bear, the advertising icon of the U.S. Forest Service’s Wildfire Prevention program, has been...

Close to Home: A gentle man, a fraught encounter
Mr. Butterfly is a developmentally delayed man. He’s small statured with a knock-kneed gait. He’s gentle natured. His small voice has limited vocabulary. He’s illiterate. Mr. Butterfly has the heart and mind of a 5-year-old. And in his 5-year-old imagination, he dreams of catching butterflies to feel their magical flutter and beauty.
A dreamy production at the park
On a warm Saturday evening at the downtown Winters Community Park, I set up a chair to enjoy a special production of a very familiar play, the classic Shakespearean comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” produced by Mary Lou Linvill with Denise Cottrell. The park is a perfect location for such a production, as the wooden, multi-level stage was built by members of the community with dedication.
Sean McCawley, Fit for Life in Napa Valley: Utilizing exercise to reinforce confidence in balance
The ability to maintain our body’s balance throughout our everyday life activities is critically important to our productivity and functionality. Deconditioned fitness levels, recovering from a significant surgery, or the general advancement of age play a role in creating unbalanced environments. Standing up from seated or lying down positions, correcting our walking path if we need to suddenly move out of the way of a moving object, or the muscular strength and coordination of our core and lower extremities affect balance. Finding exercises to practice and reinforce the ability to stay balanced in circumstances that offer presentations of imbalance are vital assets to the general population's fitness routine.

It is my job as an artist to record historic events, and the recent presidential developments marks as one of those moments. I repeat each time I speak out that I am Canadian-American and see the political agenda in this country from a different perspective. I spent much of my...

Many strings attached
A convoy of beloved celebrities is scheduled to arrive in Sonoma on Friday, Aug. 2. Local officials, however, aren’t worried about traffic jams, security issues or swarms of paparazzi. These superstars are stringed marionettes and hand puppets, and they won’t cause a scene until after they’re escorted into the Sonoma Community Center for the Northern California Puppet Festival. But once they’re inside, watch out.
