A bottle and can drive at St. Helens High School is becoming a familiar event, and it’s for a good cause.
The drive, to benefit the St. Helens High School and Middle School band and color guard programs, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, in the high school parking lot by the mural.
“This drive actually benefits our general fund,” Lisa Scholl, who runs public relations for the St. Helens Band Patrons, said. “We used to do the fireworks sale, around July Fourth. When we started having the bad smoke and a lot of fire danger, we decided not to do fireworks sales anymore.
“Instead of doing that, we do two bottle and can drives in the summer, and they both go to benefit our general fund that helps pay for competition fees and general expenses.”
She says the band program needs to raise about $100,000 a year for Band Patrons, an organization that benefits the high school and middle school.
Scholl said these bottle and can drives are usually held monthly.
“Usually, in the fall, we might take off one month because we get so busy with marching season,” she said, noting that local porch pickups are offered on the day of the bottle and can drive. Drivers will be available 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. To request a pickup, email shbandcans@gmail.com.
Lisa’s husband, Ryan, said these bottle and can drives provide a chance to meet your neighbors.
“A lot of parents are out there, we love to chat with people,” he said. “I spend more time talking than I do working, sometimes.”
