The annual Jefferson Ruritan Carnival will be held from July 22 to 27. Saturday night food platters include fried chicken and fried shrimp, 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20/adults, $10/child (6-12), free for 5 and under. Spinouts with Elvis Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Grave of Black veteran of War of 1812 receives headstone
Samuel Neale lays in rest just down the street from where he lived for decades, a longtime resident of Frederick and Black veteran of the War of 1812. Neale was honored Saturday with the dedication of a headstone at his grave in St. John's Cemetery along East Street in Frederick, part of an effort to recognize the service of Black veterans of the war.
Junior Mentoring Program returns color run to Sam Michael’s Park
HARPERS FERRY – After a successful first event last year, Junior Mentoring Programs (JuMP) is bringing back their color run a little earlier this year. Last year’s event brought 70 runners together in a fundraiser for JuMP. It’s one of the group’s two annual fundraisers, the other being a golf tournament. Last year, their first-ever color run took place in September, and now they’ve decided to move it up to August.

On July 11, Jim Britenbaugh of Fairfield, Pennsylvania, landed a 12-pound, 6-ounce largemouth bass measuring 25 inches while practicing for a tournament. It's official – the DEC confirmed that catch and placed it on the list of state-record catches. Britenbaugh's catch tops the previous record set 37 years ago out of Buckhorn Lake.

Frederick Health Auxiliary in June donated $245,000 to Frederick Health Hospital's ReEnvisioning Critical Care Campaign. The payment is part of the auxiliary's $1 million pledge toward the campaign. Amendment needed to financial education policy
For several years, I lobbied state legislators to pass a bill requiring students to earn credit in personal finance to graduate. As you may know, this requirement finally came to fruition, and starting with the 2024 cohort, entering ninth graders will be required to take a personal finance class to graduate. The intention was that students would be more financially fit in life if they knew the basics of personal finance. When people are financially stable, they are less likely to end up in prisons or rehab programs. They are more likely to be contributing members of society. Sounds great, right?
