Winds affect offshore fishing, red snapper season
While much of the last week has been windier than we would like, we’ll put up with some extra summer wind if it brings some rain with it. Before this latest round of rain, much of the Cape Fear area was classified as being in moderate drought and a few areas were a step worse in extreme drought. The numbers aren’t in yet on exactly how much the latest rains helped alleviate our rain shortage, but there’s no doubt it helped. Several folks commented they were glad the downpours held off until after the Fourth of July celebration and that might be okay, but we’re sure glad it didn’t wait any longer.
Officials celebrate federal funding for Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement, toll issue lingers
Late last week, Governor Roy Cooper and others announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation had identified a replacement for the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge as the recipient of a major grant, with funding coming from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and covers roughly half of the current estimated $485 million cost. The USDOT directed funding to the project at the direction of the Biden Administration.
$242 million in funding for Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement
The Biden Administration announced $242 million worth of grant support for the replacement of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge in Wilmington. The nearly half-billion-dollar project has been a contentious issue in Southeastern North Carolina for quite some time. The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, which opened in 1969 and carries over 70,000 cars and trucks every day, is reaching the end of its usable life according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). NCDOT conducted a massive preservation project in January of this year to replace both the bridge deck and stringers to extend the bridge’s life.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A surprise offer to buy several downtown Wilmington was a topic of discussion at Tuesday’s Wilmington City Council meeting. Dinosaur Holdings LLC offered $16 million for four pieces of property: the Market Street parking deck, Second Street parking deck, and the United Bank Building and its parking lot.

Gov. Cooper visits Wilmington to announce $242 million for Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A federal grant for $242 million is making the idea of replacing the aging Cape Fear Memorial Bridge a reality. The grant was first announced on Friday, July 12. On July 17, state and local leaders talked more about that grant funding during a press conference.
Turtle nesting season off to a slow start
Oak Island’s 2024 turtle season is off to a slow start, but those familiar with the annual visitors know Mother Nature can change things in a hurry. Oak Island Sea Turtle Protection Program (OISTPP), an all-volunteer nonprofit, registered the first nest – of not only its season but the state’s – on May 6, and as of June 28 had reported 47 totals finds so far in 2024, all loggerheads. OISTPP co-coordinator Suzan Bell said the current number of nests is lining with up with 2020, when there were a total of 96 for the year. OITC has reported more than 100 nests every year since.

Blue Economy Index underperforms benchmarks in June
The University of North Carolina Wilmington said Wednesday that its monthly measure of ocean-related economic activities underperformed its closest benchmarks last month. The index that measures economic activities in the oceans fell by 3.71% in June.
