Bike and pedestrian efforts are underway in Kure Beach. Here's the latest on 4 projects.
Every year, visitors from all over come to enjoy all that Pleasure Island has to offer and during the summer months Kure Beach is bustling with people. Though the year-round population of the town is just over 2,000 residents, an influx of tourists can be found riding their bikes or walking to local destinations, some of the most popular being the Kure Beach Fishing Pier, the Ocean Front Park and Pavilion, the Carolina Beach Island Greenway and Joe Eakes Park.
Wilmington Municipal Golf Course to close for verticutting and aerification
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Municipal Golf Course will be closed for five days for some general course maintenance. According to the City of Wilmington’s website, the course will be closed starting at noon on Monday, July 15th through Friday, July 19th. This is for verticutting and aerification of the tees, fairways and greens. The website says this necessary to keep the course in good condition throughout the year. The course will reopen on Saturday, July 20th.
First Alert Forecast: another Heat Advisory on Monday for southeast NC
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - As expected, moderate to heavy showers came in more frequent waves from Thursday to Saturday. Wilmington officially recorded 3.02 inches of rain in this stretch; tallies were somewhat variable and all significant across the Cape Fear Region. We’ll see what drought relief these rains may have brought when NOAA’s report comes out this Thursday.

20 911 calls made after shooting on 14th Street in Wilmington
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A total of 20 911 calls were made after a shooting on 14th Street in Wilmington that critically injured a man on June 29. Police responded to a Shot Spotter notification at the 400 block of S. 14th Street at around 10:30 p.m. on June 29 and found a man outside suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was hospitalized and has since been released, but nobody has been arrested in the case so far.

USDOT awards $242 million grant for the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. RALEIGH: Today, the Biden Administration announced a transformational $242 million grant to support the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement project in Wilmington. Funding for this grant gives this project an extraordinary boost toward completion and comes from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
